Woodbine Motel
VinelandWoodbine Motel serves as a practical gathering place near the town and Shade Creek, linking Takeshi Fumimota and DL’s community-facing karmic-repair work with the informal nighttime economy of Vato and Blood’s towing business. Its meeting room and parking lot give the motel distinct roles: one accommodates open testimony, while the other becomes a place to assess cars and potential earnings.
Setting and Use
The motel stood a short distance from town, across Shade Creek. Takeshi and DL rented a meeting room there for Saturdays and Sundays. On weekdays, their meetings instead took place in a back room at Zero Inn, where anyone could enter and contribute testimony. The contrast makes Woodbine one part of a modest, accessible network of meeting spaces rather than an exclusive office: the work moved between a rented motel room and a public-facing room at an inn.
Karmic-Repair Meetings
The weekend room supported the practical development of Takeshi and DL’s work. Their business had grown out of an unplanned stop by Shade Creek, where they encountered a community of Thanatoids and the continuing disputes around dispossession and betrayal. As their initial investigation became less urgent, they took on other complicated cases involving land and water rights, intimidation, landlords, lawyers, and developers. Woodbine’s meeting room gave people a place to bring accounts of these persistent grievances, while the weekday arrangement at Zero Inn kept the process open to walk-ins.
The Parking Lot and Vato and Blood
Woodbine’s parking lot also figures in the first encounter between Takeshi and DL and the tow operators Vato and Blood. Late at night, Vato and Blood were cruising the lot in their Custom Deluxe, Mi Vida Loca, looking for cars worth towing. They assessed vehicles not simply by price but by the likely temperament of their owners: a Rolls-Royce owner might treat reclaiming a car as an amusing adventure and leave a tip, whereas towing a Mercedes could mean an unprofitable and hostile encounter. When Takeshi and DL appeared in the headlights, Vato was so captivated by DL that he continued talking without knowing what he was saying. The setting thus brings the characters together through two very different kinds of work: public listening and karmic repair on one hand, and the calculation of risk and profit on the other.
