Steve Strickland’s death while trying to protect Chris Hanson, known as Lobo, turns a personal bond formed during deployment into a costly breach of orders. After Lobo was shot down over the Kola Peninsula and captured, Strickland refused a recall order and circled her crash site to provide covering fire. His aircraft was hit by a ZSU during a low strafing run; Strickland and his radar intercept officer did not survive. The episode links attachment, disobedience, and combat loss without making the protective gesture a rescue: Lobo was captured, while Strickland died trying to shield her.
