North Carolina

Decoded

North Carolina is the setting of the Wrights’ Flyer’s first successful flight and the moment Rong Youying’s contribution to the aircraft was carried into the sky. The scene links a specific place and landscape to the novel’s account of the beginnings of powered flight and to her recognition as a designer.

Setting and Flight

Two years after the Wright brothers visited Rong Youying at Cambridge, she was in the United States with them. In North Carolina, the first airplane successfully took off over the sand dunes and soared into the sky. The account makes the dunes the ground from which a new form of human travel begins.

Rong Youying’s Credit

A silver-lettered inscription beneath the aircraft recorded the people most important to its design and construction. Its fourth line credited Rong Youying, from C City, China, as wing designer. The flight therefore did more than demonstrate the aircraft’s success: it also made her role part of the record carried with the machine.

Narrative Significance

North Carolina marks the culmination of a sequence that began with the Wright brothers’ visit to Cambridge and their invitation, which Rong Youying accepted after being impressed by their vision and bravery. The place becomes the setting where her mathematical and design ability enters the history of flight—not merely as a private accomplishment, but as a contribution publicly named beneath the aircraft as it rose.
