Poland

Decoded

Poland is a point of family origin and mounting danger in Jan Liseiwicz’s story: first linked to the aristocratic family into which he was born, it later appears in a report of Nazi expansion that narrowed his options for leaving China.

Family Background

Jan Liseiwicz was born in 1901 into a Polish aristocratic family. His mother was Jewish, and the account presents his exceptional intelligence and early devotion to chess alongside this family background. Poland is not described as a place he visits; its significance here is biographical, grounding his origins in a Europe whose political circumstances would soon become increasingly dangerous.

Poland in the European Crisis

In the spring of 1938, Jan Liseiwicz arrived at N University as a visiting scholar, apparently seeking talent for recruitment. After Hitler invaded Austria, a friend in the United States sent him a letter describing the worsening situation in Europe. The report named Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland among the countries through which Nazi power was advancing, and said that Jewish people were being forced to flee while those who had not left in time were being sent to camps.

Consequences for Liseiwicz

The news altered the practical meaning of Jan Liseiwicz’s stay in China. He had intended to continue toward the United States, but the deteriorating situation in Europe left him feeling that there was nowhere else to go and that he would remain at N University for the foreseeable future. Poland’s mention therefore belongs to the account of a wider crisis that constrained his choices, rather than to a separate episode set in the country.

Narrative Significance

The novel gives Poland a limited but important role: it connects Jan Liseiwicz’s family background to the danger confronting Jewish people in Europe, and helps explain why a temporary academic appointment in China became a longer stay. The country enters the narrative through biography and received news, making the distant European crisis a force that shapes events in China.
