Unit 701 Northern Complex
DecodedThe Unit 701 Northern Complex is the hidden operational center of Unit 701 and the place where Rong Jinzhen will spend the rest of his life. Its separation from the training center is both practical and symbolic: access runs through a cavernous underground route and a checkpoint, while the cryptographic work assigned to Rong begins only after he has crossed into this guarded world.
Setting and Layout
The Northern Complex lies beyond a huge system of mountain caves that spreads in several directions, with passages opening into one another like a maze. Three months after Rong arrives at the training center, a young man sent by Zheng the Gimp comes to collect him by motorbike. Instead of heading toward the main gate, the driver takes him farther into the compound and into the caves.
After about ten minutes, they stop beside a round-topped steel door. The driver goes inside, returns, and continues riding; after a further stretch underground, the motorbike emerges on the far side of the complex. A series of buildings, many times larger than the training center, opens into view. This is the Northern Complex, the base of the secretive Unit 701.
The Checkpoint and Its Boundary
The training center is known as the Southern Complex, and it serves as the gateway and checkpoint for the Northern Complex. Anyone who fails inspection at the Southern Complex cannot even glimpse the northern buildings. The account compares the arrangement to a moated citadel reached by a single drawbridge: the barrier is not merely an obstacle on a route but the condition of entry.
The steel door marks a further boundary within that passage. Rong’s work will take place on its far side. The sequence makes the geography of the site legible as a system of controlled access: first the training center’s screening, then the cave route, then the steel door, and finally the work area beyond it.
Arrival and Work
After the motorbike reaches the buildings, it stops outside a red-brick building covered in creepers. The smell of cooking identifies it as a canteen. Zheng the Gimp is eating inside; seeing Rong through the window, he comes out with a bun in his hand and invites him in. Rong has not yet eaten breakfast, so the arrival at the new complex first takes the form of an ordinary meal before the significance of his transfer becomes clear.
When Rong asks whether the arrangement is a special welcome, Zheng explains that the work is more important than the work assigned to the others. After breakfast, Rong begins cryptography, a profession he had not realized he was being prepared to enter. At the training center, he had studied the history, geography, foreign relations, government officials, military strength, installations, and defenses of X Country, and had guessed that he might become a military expert, an instructor, an attaché, or a spy. He had not considered cryptography. The move into the Northern Complex therefore carries him from extensive preparation into work whose nature had remained concealed from him.
Narrative Significance
The Northern Complex’s architecture gives physical form to Unit 701’s secrecy. Its scale, underground approaches, controlled entrance, and division from the Southern Complex make the institution difficult to see from outside and difficult to enter from within. Rong’s arrival is a threshold crossing: the motorbike carries him past the point where ordinary training ends and into the setting of the work to which he will devote his life.
