Aral Vorkosigan
MemoryAral Vorkosigan is Miles’s father, a former military captain and senior political figure whose history with Komarr gives particular weight to his support for Gregor’s proposed marriage to Laisa Toscane. Though much of his role is conveyed through messages and brief encounters, his words and gestures connect Miles’s family life to the Imperium’s unresolved political history: he recognizes the risks of a Komarran imperial marriage, hopes Gregor can succeed where he himself did not, and offers Miles support even after Miles’s career changes course.
Identity and Background
A recording sent from Sergyar presents Aral as a thick-bodied, white-haired man in his early seventies, wearing the brown-and-silver uniform of Vorkosigan House. The message reaches Miles on his thirtieth birthday by government data tight-beam, much faster than a mailed message disk; Aral and Cordelia Vorkosigan appear together in the vid frame, smiling and small against the screen. Their warmth is immediate, but Miles realizes that they have not yet been told of his changed status.
Aral recalls that he was a captain by twenty-eight and that ship duty suited him. He remained in that kind of service until Emperor Ezar and senior headquarters officials began planning the annexation of Komarr, after which he was drawn into desk work. His recollection places his military career alongside the beginning of a political history that still shadows the present. A former political enemy’s nickname for him was the Butcher of Komarr, a label that underscores how contentious that history remains without defining the whole of his character.
Komarr and the Imperial Marriage
Gregor’s proposed marriage to Laisa is not, in Aral’s view, a private match insulated from politics. He warns that an imperial marriage to a Komarran carries potential complications, yet says that if Gregor will do his duty and produce a Crown Prince, he will support the project. The prospect also promises relief to Aral and others of his generation who had been among the possible heirs. His position joins dynastic calculation to a personal wish: he hopes Laisa is a good person and that Gregor can find happiness after bearing the burdens of the imperial family.
Aral’s support is not naïve about the marriage’s symbolism. Miles fears that Komarrans may see the union as another sign of their subordination to Barrayar; Aral’s own past, including his association with Komarr’s annexation, makes the question of reconciliation especially charged. He nonetheless tells Miles to assure Gregor of his full support and trusts Gregor’s judgment. The approval is qualified by awareness of the political difficulties, but it is not withheld on that account.
In a later conversation, Gregor says that the marriage might help heal relations with Komarr and imagines a truly unified empire. Miles encourages him, suggesting that a marriage between Duv Galeni and a Barrayaran could reinforce that change. Aral is not present in that exchange, but the political hope it articulates echoes the difficulty he recognized: a dynastic union can offer a public image of unity without automatically settling the history beneath it.
A Father’s Support for Miles
Aral’s birthday message is affectionate and candid about survival. He and Cordelia congratulate Miles on reaching thirty alive, recalling how often they had wondered whether he would make it. Aral says that he is far away on Sergyar but remembers Miles each morning when he looks in the mirror at his white hair. Cordelia teasingly corrects his account of when he began to go gray, making their shared history part of the birthday greeting rather than a solemn memorial to danger.
The recording also reveals a gap between parental concern and Miles’s current circumstances: Aral and Cordelia have not yet heard that Miles’s status has changed. Aral invites him to route his next mission through Sergyar and stay at least briefly, pointing to developments there that matter to the Imperium’s future. The invitation is both practical and familial: he wants Miles to see what is happening, and the couple miss him.
When Cordelia later reports Aral’s reaction to Miles’s civilian life, she describes mixed feelings and logically conflicting reassurances, which she reduces to a simple certainty: Miles has his father’s support, always. Miles asks whether Aral was disappointed. Cordelia answers by recalling how hard he worked for what he had achieved and the odds he faced. The exchange does not erase disappointment or pretend that Miles’s change of direction is inconsequential; it establishes that paternal loyalty survives those complicated feelings.
At Gregor’s betrothal, Aral recognizes Miles’s advancement with dry humor. He congratulates him on becoming an Imperial Auditor and on acquiring a captaincy by an unusually roundabout route. The remark acknowledges Miles’s achievement without disguising its unconventional path, and continues the family’s characteristic mixture of pride and teasing.
Sergyar, Return, and Family Presence
Aral’s life on Sergyar keeps him at a distance from court and from the political demands that follow him. Cordelia explains that his stay in Vorbarr Sultana will be short: old political associates regularly arrive with projects for his supposedly nonexistent spare time, and the couple must entertain them before gently sending them away. Sergyar makes it harder for those former colleagues to reach him. Cordelia also invites Miles to visit, noting that an effective treatment for the local worms has replaced the earlier need for surgical removal.
For Gregor’s betrothal, Aral arrives from Sergyar the day before the ceremony. The winter weather has delayed the gathering, and his entrance through the east portico brings visible relief to Alys Vorpatril, who has been managing the event. Aral and Cordelia exchange a hard embrace that nearly dislodges the flowers in her hair. His pleasure at seeing her is expressed through the physical reunion and a joke about the inaccurate weather forecast; with Miles, in the public setting, he exchanges only a hand-grip, but makes it eloquent. He says that they must talk, while Miles points out that Alys has first claim on him.
At the ceremony, Aral stands with Cordelia as one of Gregor’s foster parents, while Miles serves as Gregor’s Second. The arrangement places him not merely among the witnesses but within the family formation surrounding the match. His presence also marks the distance between his earlier involvement in Komarr’s annexation and the new generation’s attempt to build a more inclusive imperial future.
Political and Narrative Significance
Aral’s history gives the proposed marriage its generational dimension. He remembers the planning of Komarr’s annexation and admits that he did not succeed as well as he had hoped; his hope that Gregor may do better is therefore more than ceremonial encouragement. He welcomes a new generation and the possibility of a clean start, while his caution about the marriage’s complications prevents that hope from becoming a claim that political wounds have already healed.
His relationship with Miles makes a parallel tension visible at the family scale. Aral is proud of his son’s difficult achievements, aware that the loss of Miles’s former status carries emotional consequences, and unwavering in his support. In the story’s imperial crisis, he is also revealed as the original target of the conspiracy that disrupted ImpSec: the chip-destroying microorganism had been made for Komarran terrorists, and the attack on Simon Illyan was timed to coincide with an assassination attempt against Aral, then Prime Minister. That connection makes Aral’s past more than background to the current marriage debate; it shows how political conflict has already reached into his family and the institutions he served.
