Emperor Ezar

Memory

Emperor Ezar’s significance in this account is conveyed through an object rather than through a scene of his own: the neural memory chip whose history began as his ultra-secure data store. The contrast between Ezar’s personal use for the device and its later association with Illyan’s public authority separates the apparatus’s political aura from the abilities that made Illyan an effective leader.

Identity and Historical Context

Emperor Ezar appears in Miles Vorkosigan’s explanation of the chip’s history. It had served as an ultra-secure data dump for the Emperor, a use that helps account for why the device was not built for ordinary data transfer. The account does not describe Ezar’s wider rule or actions; it situates him through this unusually private and technically formidable piece of Imperial equipment.

The Chip as Ezar’s Recording Device

Miles characterizes the chip not as a means of making Illyan a superhuman administrator, but as a device Ezar wanted as a personal recorder. The distinction is central to Miles’s assessment: the chip accumulated a record of experience, while its later installation in Illyan gave that record a different institutional meaning. Its origins as Ezar’s secure data store also help explain its resistant design. It had no single data port; thousands of neuronic leads entered and left across its surface, making it unsuitable for straightforward downloading.

Illyan’s Authority and Ezar’s Legacy

The chip eventually contributed to Illyan’s reputation for near-infallibility, an impression Miles regards as misleading. Illyan’s importance to ImpSec, Miles argues, came from his judgment and abilities, not from the memory device. He became chief during a civil war after his predecessor was murdered, when there was no time for a search for candidates; Miles says his father, Aral Vorkosigan, trusted Illyan and appointed him. Ezar’s legacy in this recollection is therefore double-edged: his recording device became associated with state authority, but it was only a minor part of the explanation for Illyan’s leadership.
