Ivan Vorpatril

Memory

Ivan Vorpatril is Miles Vorkosigan’s cousin and a serving officer in the Imperial Service, first shown as a familiar presence in Miles’s unsettled life after his return to Vorkosigan House. His role grows from teasing relative to a source of sustained practical support: he helps watch over Miles after his discharge, assists with the investigation into Simon Illyan’s breakdown, and takes part in the operation that brings Lucas Haroche into custody. Their relationship is built on the ease of long acquaintance, but it also gives Ivan room to challenge Miles rather than simply indulge him.

Identity and Position

When Miles calls him in desperation, Ivan is still a lieutenant working at Imperial Service headquarters. His undress greens resemble Miles’s, but the Ops insignia on Ivan’s collar marks a different branch of service. The contrast establishes both their closeness and their distinct careers: Ivan remains at the same desk by day and enjoys the ordinary social life of a Vor officer in the capital, while Miles is newly back and uncomfortable with having Vorkosigan House to himself.

Ivan greets Miles with a genuine smile, making their reunion an immediate point of warmth in Miles’s isolation. When he calls again two days later, he is still arriving from work in uniform, but his collar now bears captain’s tabs. The promotion is official as of that morning; Ivan has kept the news quiet because he wanted the family to be surprised. Miles reacts with sharp envy, and Ivan answers by pointing to his own steady service and Miles’s time on medical leave. The exchange makes their rivalry affectionate but not weightless: Miles measures himself against Ivan, while Ivan is willing to remind him that their records and circumstances differ.

Ivan’s wit is part of how he moves through the family, but it is not the whole of his character. He can make light of Miles’s eccentricities and still recognize when the situation has become serious. Across the events shown, he repeatedly shifts from banter to responsible action without making a performance of that change.

Care During Miles’s Crisis

As Miles withdraws into a private room and refuses to respond to people calling for him, Ivan comes looking. He finds Miles with Duv Galeni and uses the knowledge of Miles’s hatred of cold, acquired during Miles’s time as a weather officer at Camp Permafrost, to jolt him out of his withdrawal. The intervention is deliberately provocative: Ivan gets Miles into a cold bath, expecting a reaction rather than offering a gentle conversation. Miles emerges furious and lands a blow, the first time he has ever successfully struck Ivan. The prank briefly restores movement and contact between the cousins, even though it does so through a contest rather than a calm appeal.

Ivan’s concern continues after this confrontation. When Miles plans to travel alone to the family’s southern district, he obtains Miles’s formal promise not to attempt suicide, actively or passively. Ivan accepts the pledge reluctantly, then warns Martin Kosti to watch for signs of trouble beyond seizures and gives him contact numbers for emergencies or behavior that seems seriously abnormal. Miles resents the implied surveillance and worries that Martin now sees him as unstable. The scene nevertheless shows Ivan responding to a risk Miles himself would rather not discuss: he delegates vigilance to someone who will be travelling with Miles, while still allowing him to make the journey.

Ivan also tries to remove practical barriers to medical care. When he learns that Miles has made no appointment, he asks why and listens as Miles explains that his dismissal from ImpSec was for falsifying a serious report, not for having seizures. Miles believes that even perfect medical recovery would not undo the breach of principle between him and Simon Illyan. Ivan has already researched three civilian clinics with experience in cryo-revival cases: one in Vorbarr Sultana, one in Weienovya, and one on Komarr. He offers to arrange an appointment, showing that his care takes the form of concrete preparation rather than a demand that Miles immediately accept his own judgment.

Family Duties and Social Life

Ivan is repeatedly drawn into family business through the expectations placed on him by relatives. When Gregor and Laisa Toscane face the approaching complexities of their weddings, Miles assures them that the family will help. Ivan admits that his mother has already volunteered him. His response is rueful, but he does not withdraw from the obligation; the scene places him among the people expected to support the couple through public ceremonies in both Barrayar and Komarr.

At a later gathering, Ivan is escorting Martya Koudelka. Martya notices that he is watching her sister, Delia Koudelka, rather than attending to his dance partner. The exchange presents his interest in Delia as visible to others and gives his social life a parallel to Miles’s emerging responsibilities. Ivan is not only the cousin who manages Miles’s crises; he is also navigating his own attachments within the same connected family circle.

Assistant to the Auditor

When Gregor appoints Miles to investigate ImpSec’s handling of Simon Illyan’s breakdown, Ivan is summoned to the Emperor’s office and named as Miles’s assistant. He first jokes that he has been recruited as a pack animal. Miles then makes clear that the audit may involve serious danger and that he needs someone he can trust completely. Ivan’s joking manner drops; he welcomes the investigation and says it is time someone acted. His readiness joins personal loyalty to a sense of institutional duty.

That loyalty is tested in the setting most closely associated with the case. At Illyan’s side, Ivan admits he would rather face a laser-cannon site without clothes than remain alone in the room. The remark is comic, but it communicates real unease. Miles tells him to stay with Illyan until he returns, and Ivan takes the chair beside him. His willingness to remain is not presented as fearlessness; it matters precisely because he dislikes the task and does it anyway.

Ivan also carries out sensitive investigative work. When Miles identifies the evidence inventory as a potential route into the case, he orders Ivan to requisition four highly cleared people who have never worked for or with ImpSec and make them Ivan’s team. Ivan immediately objects to being assigned the entire inventory, but the concern behind Miles’s request is clear: Miles cannot personally handle evidence that may have been planted to implicate him. In the Evidence Rooms, Ivan opens a sealed container using the access code listed on its inventory record. He finds three small brown capsules in a gel-lined box with six slots, although the record says five should remain after one was removed and listed as destroyed. The discrepancy gives the investigation a concrete lead. Ivan later reports that the original container has been examined and returned, asks to be relieved so he can sleep, and follows Miles’s order to return it to the Evidence Rooms’ guardianship before taking time off.

Arrest and Later Direction

Ivan is present when Duv Galeni’s arrest disrupts a gathering. He and Martya move toward Miles and Galeni as the arresting colonel struggles to maintain control. Ivan’s presence places him among the family members witnessing the public consequences of an investigation that has become personal as well as political. Later, when Lucas Haroche resists Miles’s demand for a fuller inquiry, he invokes his oath to Gregor and the harm an investigation could do to ImpSec. At Haroche’s eventual arrest, Ivan is among those drafted to help Allegre carry it out. The move from auditor’s assistant to participant in the arrest gives Ivan a practical role in the case’s resolution, rather than leaving him merely as Miles’s offstage support.

After the investigation, Ivan tells Miles that he has asked Delia Koudelka to marry him. Miles congratulates him and assumes that Ivan’s mother will be delighted; Ivan replies that she will not be. The exchange leaves the reason unstated and does not establish what Delia’s answer will be. It does, however, close the available arc with Ivan making a serious choice of his own. Throughout the account, he is defined by a combination of familiar irreverence and dependable service: he needles Miles, monitors him when he is in danger, accepts difficult assignments, and steps into public responsibilities when needed. His support is neither delicate nor uncritical, but it repeatedly gives Miles a reliable human connection when isolation threatens to become its own crisis.
