Jackson's Whole
MemoryJackson's Whole is a commercial and medical frontier in Miles Vorkosigan's history: the site of his cryo-revival and, later, the origin of a covertly commissioned biological weapon aimed at Barrayar. Its specialized expertise and powerful Houses make it a place where extraordinary medical intervention and clandestine engineering can be purchased, while the dispersal of records and the anonymity of contracted work complicate any effort to establish who is responsible.
Medicine, Records, and Miles Vorkosigan
Miles Vorkosigan's connection to Jackson's Whole began with his cryo-revival after the needle-grenade attack that had destroyed his chest. A surgeon from the Durona Group restored his organs, and the results remained visible in the scars across his torso even as his new heart and lungs became functional and his previously brittle bones were largely replaced with synthetics. His recovery was not only a past medical episode: it left him with seizures whose existence he concealed from the Imperial Security physicians assessing his fitness for duty.
The clinic's history also made the location difficult to investigate from afar. After the Durona Group's hurried departure from Jackson's Whole, its records were scattered between Escobar and House Fell. Complete copies of the surgeon's medical records took months to surface and be examined closely enough for their implications to be recognized. Jackson's Whole thus appears in the story both as the place where Miles received life-altering treatment and as the point of origin for evidence that arrives late, after the people and records involved have been dispersed.
A Market for Commissioned Biology
The later investigation traced a second, more dangerous kind of Jacksonian expertise: the chip-eating prokaryote that had damaged Simon Illyan’s memory chip. Vaughn Weddell judged from its design that an existing medical organism had been pirated for a new purpose, then modified through shortcuts consistent with illegal Jacksonian work. The absence of features associated with legitimate mass trade suggested a custom job for a single customer, not a product intended for open sale.
The estimated price made the arrangement seem organized rather than casual. Weddell put the laboratory costs at under fifty thousand Betan dollars, but said secrecy could drive the price to about five times that amount or more. That estimate left room for a wealthy individual, yet made a commissioning organization seem more plausible to Miles. Jackson’s Whole offered not only technical capacity but also a commercial structure in which a buyer could pay for specialized biological work and conceal the transaction behind intermediaries.
The location initially widened suspicion without resolving it. Miles considered whether one of the powerful Houses might have ordered the sabotage: House Fell had the resources, House Bharaputra had been angered by Admiral Naismith, and House Ryoval had both resources and a reputation for recklessness, though its Baron was dead and the House dismembered. Weddell’s former employer, Bharaputra Labs, was not indicated by the design, and no House could be identified from the technical evidence alone. The uncertainty also made a direct search on Jackson’s Whole unattractive: if Imperial Security itself was compromised, sending its own field agents to investigate would create another vulnerability.
The eventual findings established that the biological weapon had indeed been made on Jackson’s Whole, commissioned for Komarran terrorists by a House Minor better known for tailored drugs. Simon Illyan had been the intended target from the beginning; the attack was timed to disrupt Imperial Security at the same time as the attempted assassination of then–Prime Minister Count Aral Vorkosigan. An earlier investigation had already followed the organism to its building of origin and traced the Komarran payment to the Jacksonian biochemists’ bank accounts. The new inquiry therefore confronted not an unknowable trail but a buried one: Jackson’s Whole’s role had been documented, while the records and institutional memory needed to recover that knowledge had failed to remain readily accessible.
A Place Miles Cannot Leave Behind
Jackson’s Whole remained entangled with Miles Vorkosigan’s private life as well as his official history. After hearing that Mark was still sending money to the Durona sisters, Miles wondered whether their new clinic on Escobar had opened and whether Rowan Durona might treat him there, discreetly and without leaving records for Imperial Security. He imagined taking leave to visit his parents on Sergyar and continuing from there to Escobar; an ostensible visit to a lover might even make the journey easier to explain. Rowan was also part of the place’s personal aftermath: Miles and she had briefly been lovers while he was suffering from cryo-amnesia, and he believed they had parted on good terms. His hope of returning to her for care was inseparable from his wish to fix what was wrong with his head and let no one know.
The location’s name could abruptly turn that private history into a military memory. When Simon Illyan reported that disturbing information had arrived from Jackson’s Whole, Miles’s first response was that he had died there once; he then answered with the swagger of Admiral Naismith, ready for a rematch. The exchange binds the remembered death to the persona through which Miles had survived and acted, even as the report concerned his own earlier adventure rather than a new mission. Jackson’s Whole is therefore not simply a distant source of danger: its return in conversation brings Miles’s bodily vulnerability and his performed readiness for action into the same moment.
Expertise in Motion
Jackson’s Whole’s influence extends beyond work performed there: people and knowledge could leave it and reappear elsewhere. Vaughn Weddell, once known as Canaba, was brought from Jackson’s Whole to Barrayar as a refugee on an early mission of the Dendarii Mercenary Fleet, with a new identity and highly secret genetic research. His past included work on Sergeant Taura, one of his earlier and more ambiguous projects. By recruiting Weddell to help examine Illyan’s damaged memory chip, Miles drew on expertise shaped by Jackson’s Whole even though the investigation was taking place on Barrayar. The connection complicates any simple boundary between the location and its consequences: its significance travels with the specialists, records, and commissioned knowledge that move away from it.
