Waking in the Oval Bed

The Disoriented Scientist
A Mysterious Recovery
Ryland Grace regains consciousness in a sterile, oval-shaped bed, his mind a blank slate. He is naked, connected to dozens of tubes and electrodes, and monitored by a computer that asks simple arithmetic questions. The confusion is immediate: he cannot remember his name, his past, or why he is here. The room is round, with three beds, two of which contain mummified bodies. The robot arms overhead suggest a long-term care facility, but the absence of doctors and the submarine-like hatch indicate something far more unusual.
The First Clues
As Grace struggles to move, he discovers his body is muscular and well-toned, contradicting the expected atrophy from a prolonged coma. He tries to speak, but his first words are slurred. The computer's relentless questioning gradually draws out his cognitive abilities. He learns that he can move his fingers, then his arms, and eventually sit up. The sight of the two dead crewmates gives him a jolt of fear and determination. He realizes he must be in a spaceship, not a hospital.
The Gravity Anomaly
Grace's first scientific experiment reveals that the gravity in the room is 1.5 times Earth's normal, which cannot be explained by any known planet. He deduces that he is not on Earth at all. This realization triggers a flash of memory: an email about a mysterious infrared line from the Sun, the 'Petrova line', and a woman named Marissa who warned him about the Sun's dimming. The memory is incomplete, but it plants the seed that his mission involves a catastrophic threat to humanity.
Remembering the Name

The Struggle for Identity
A Name Lost in the Fog
Grace's amnesia is a central obstacle. Each time the computer asks for his name, he fails. He tries random guesses like 'John', but the computer rejects them. The frustration builds as he realizes that without his name, he cannot access the upper hatch of the ship. This lock becomes a symbolic barrier between him and the answers he needs.
A Flash of Memory
While crawling on the floor after a painful catheter removal, he sees a thin line of his own blood. This triggers a memory of an email titled 'The Thin Red Line' from Dr. Irina Petrova, describing an anomalous infrared arc from the Sun to Venus. The memory is vivid but incomplete. He recalls living in San Francisco, eating breakfast at a diner, and being a scientist. But his name remains elusive.
The Name Revealed
After a period of intense meditation and introspection, Grace finally remembers his name: Ryland Grace. He also recalls that he is a schoolteacher, a fact that brings him a sense of grounding. With his name, he unlocks the hatch and begins to explore the ship, discovering the lab and the control room. This breakthrough marks the turning point from passive victim to active investigator.
Discovering the Hail Mary Mission

The Ship's Purpose
First Contact with the Blip-A

The Alien Ship
A Flash in the Petrovascope
After the Hail Mary enters orbit around Tau Ceti, Grace uses the Petrovascope to observe the Petrova line. He sees a flash of light, then a steady glow. Panning the telescope, he discovers a massive, angular spacecraft – the Blip-A. It is three times the size of his ship, made of flat panels, and powered by Astrophage. This is intelligent alien technology, not a natural object.
First Communication
Grace flashes his own engines, and the alien ship responds in kind. A robot on the Blip-A's hull launches a cylinder toward the Hail Mary. Grace retrieves it in his EVA suit. Inside, he finds a star map model showing the local stars, with a connection between Tau Ceti and 40 Eridani. The message is clear: the aliens are from 40 Eridani and are also investigating Tau Ceti. They are in the same fight against Astrophage.
The Tunnel and Rocky
A second cylinder contains a model of the two ships connected by a tube. The aliens want to meet. Grace sends a sample of his hull, and the Blip-A constructs a xenonite tunnel. In the tunnel, a transparent wall appears, and on the other side is Rocky, a five-legged, spider-like alien. They communicate through sound and gestures. Grace names him Rocky, and a remarkable interspecies friendship begins.
Breeding and Testing Taumoeba

The Predator Discovery
Sampling the Petrova Line
Grace and Rocky collect Astrophage samples from the Tau Ceti system. Using a microscope, Grace discovers a diverse ecosystem of microorganisms, including a predator that attacks Astrophage. He names it Taumoeba. This is the key to saving Earth and Erid. The Taumoeba can be used to control the Astrophage population.
Nitrogen Toxicity Problem
However, Taumoeba cannot survive in the atmospheres of Venus or Threeworld (the Eridian equivalent) because of nitrogen. Grace and Rocky must breed a nitrogen-resistant strain. They set up multiple breeder tanks, each with increasing nitrogen concentrations, and select the survivors. The process is slow and requires careful monitoring.
Directed Evolution
Over many generations, Grace successfully breeds Taumoeba-80, which can tolerate 8% nitrogen at 0.02 atmospheres, sufficient for both Venus and Threeworld. The breakthrough is a triumph of applied evolution. But Grace discovers an unintended side effect: the Taumoeba can also permeate xenonite, the alien material used for the breeder tanks. This leads to a contamination crisis later.
The Desperate Rescue of Rocky

The Decision to Turn Back
Realizing the Contamination
Grace discovers that his Taumoeba-80 can escape xenonite, and he realizes that Rocky's ship, the Blip-A, is made of xenonite. The Taumoeba will have infected Rocky's fuel supply. Grace calculates that Rocky's ship will become derelict. He faces a choice: continue home to Earth as a hero, or turn back to save his friend, knowing he will likely die from starvation.
The Search
Grace launches the beetles to Earth with the Taumoeba data and a mini-farm, ensuring the mission continues. Then he turns the Hail Mary around and begins a painstaking search for Rocky's ship. Using his engines as a beacon and the Petrovascope, he eventually locates the Blip-A, drifting dead in space.
Reunion and Solution
Grace boards the Blip-A's hull, banging on it until Rocky responds. They reunite, and Grace explains that he can refuel Rocky's ship but cannot return to Earth due to lack of food. Rocky proposes that Grace can eat Taumoeba, which is nutritious and non-toxic. This gives Grace a chance to survive. They set course for Erid, where Grace will live among the Eridians.
Life on Erid and the Final News

A New Home
Adapting to Eridian Society
Grace becomes a permanent resident of Erid, living in a pressurized dome with Earth-like conditions. The Eridians, grateful for his role in saving their world, support him. They synthesize vitamins and clone his own cells to provide nutritious food. Grace grows old in the high gravity, but he finds purpose in teaching Eridian children about science and Earth culture.
The Good News
After many years, Rocky brings Grace the news: the Sun's brightness has returned to normal. The beetles successfully delivered the Taumoeba to Earth, and humanity used it to eliminate the Astrophage. Earth is saved. Grace is overwhelmed with joy and relief. His sacrifice has paid off.
Reflection
Grace reflects on his journey from a coward forced onto the mission to a hero who saved two worlds. He considers returning to Earth, but the long journey and his age make him hesitate. He decides to stay on Erid, where he has a friend in Rocky and a community that values him. The story ends with Grace teaching a class of young Eridians, a symbol of the enduring bond between two species.
