Blackpanel
The Blackpanel is a solar-thermal device conceived by engineer Bob Redell to solve the critical fuel bottleneck of Project Hail Mary. It is a simple, scalable apparatus designed to enrich Astrophage—the alien microbe that threatens Earth's sun—by exposing it to intense, sustained heat, turning the parasite into a high-density energy source for interstellar propulsion. Redell's invention transformed the mission from a theoretical possibility into a practical, if environmentally devastating, reality, and it became the cornerstone of humanity's last-ditch effort to reach Tau Ceti.
Design and Principle
The Blackpanel is a deceptively simple construction. A square of metal foil—any metal will do—is anodized until it is black, then placed under a sheet of clear glass with a one-centimeter gap between them. The edges are sealed with brick, foam, or another good insulator. When set out in sunlight, the black foil absorbs solar energy and heats up; the glass traps that heat, preventing it from escaping to the outside air. The panel reaches an equilibrium temperature well over 100 degrees Celsius, which is above the critical temperature of Astrophage (96.415°C). At that temperature, Astrophage cells placed inside the panel will absorb heat energy and become enriched—that is, they will store as much energy as they can hold, ready for use as rocket fuel. Redell calculated that a one-square-meter Blackpanel under ideal conditions—one thousand watts per square meter of solar energy—could produce about half a microgram of enriched Astrophage per day.
Scalability and the Sahara Farm
The genius of the Blackpanel lies not in its efficiency but in its scalability. When Ryland Grace pointed out that half a microgram per day was a far cry from the two million kilograms needed for the Hail Mary, Redell replied, "It's just a matter of how many square meters you make of it." The Sahara Desert covers nine trillion square meters. Redell proposed paving roughly a quarter of that desert—over two trillion square meters—with Blackpanels. Each panel would be made entirely of foil, glass, and ceramics, materials abundant on Earth and easy to mass-produce. The panels would not only enrich Astrophage but also breed it: a static magnet inside would simulate the sun's magnetic field to trigger the microbes' migration response; a small IR filter would let through only the carbon-dioxide spectral signature wavelengths, drawing Astrophage to a breeding zone; and a tiny pinhole would allow air exchange to replenish CO₂. After breeding, the parent and daughter cells would head back toward the glass (the direction of the sun), completing the cycle. Grace, despite his initial skepticism, admitted the design was "a sound concept" and that Redell had "thought it all through."
Implementation and Consequences
Eva Stratt, wielding her near-absolute authority, ordered the Blackpanel farm built. Redell was released from prison—where he was serving a life sentence for culpable homicide and embezzlement—and put in charge of the project in Africa. The farm succeeded in generating Astrophage at the promised levels, but the environmental cost was severe. Climatologist François Leclerc warned that paving the Sahara with black rectangles would cause "a massive disruption of heat distribution near the Mediterranean Sea," contributing to bizarre weather phenomena worldwide: tornadoes in Europe, snow in Vietnam, a chaotic jet stream. Stratt acknowledged the weather effects but insisted there was no other choice. The Blackpanel farm, for all its destructive side effects, was the only way to produce the fuel needed to launch the Hail Mary within the available time frame. It stands as a monument to the brutal calculus of survival: a world-altering industrial project that scarred a continent in order to save the species.
