The Sun's declining luminosity threatens all life on Earth with an ice age, mass starvation, and societal collapse, forcing humanity to build the Hail Mary and send a crew to Tau Ceti in search of a solution.
The Petrova Problem and the Sun's Dimming
The Sun's crisis begins when Dr. Irina Petrova, working at the Pulkovo Observatory in St. Petersburg, Russia, detects a faint infrared line at the 25.984 micron wavelength rising from the Sun's North Pole and arcing toward Venus. This "Petrova line" is later revealed to be the exhaust trail of Astrophage, an alien microorganism that feeds on the Sun's energy. Japanese space agency JAXA's solar probe Amaterasu confirms that the Sun's output is decreasing exponentially, with the dimming rate accelerating over time. The Sun's energy loss is directly correlated with the increasing brightness of the Petrova line, as Astrophage steals energy from the star. The Sun's output is projected to drop a full percent over the next nine years and five percent within twenty years, triggering an immediate ice age, crop failures, and mass starvation. The dimming is not unique to Earth's Sun; amateur astronomer data analyzed by the NSA shows that nearby stars such as Alpha Centauri, Sirius, and Epsilon Eridani have also been dimming for decades, with the infection spreading from star to star in a pattern consistent with Astrophage's maximum range of just under eight light-years.
The Sun as a Source of Energy and Life for Astrophage
Astrophage is a single-celled organism that lives on or near the surface of the Sun, where it absorbs the star's heat energy and stores it through a process of mass conversion, turning energy into mass via E=mc². The Sun's surface temperature of 5,500 degrees Celsius is far beyond the boiling point of water, yet Astrophage maintains an internal temperature of exactly 96.415 degrees Celsius regardless of external conditions, using its stored energy to regulate its body heat. This temperature is critical to Astrophage's biology: it is the point at which protons inside the cell collide with enough kinetic energy to produce pairs of neutrinos, which are then stored as mass. The Sun provides the raw energy that Astrophage needs to survive, but the organism also requires carbon dioxide to reproduce, which it cannot obtain from the star itself. This drives Astrophage to migrate from the Sun to Venus, where it collects CO₂ from the planet's atmosphere, breeds, and then returns to the Sun to begin the cycle anew.
The Sun's Role in the Hail Mary Mission
The Sun's dimming is the catalyst for the Hail Mary mission, an international effort to send a crew to Tau Ceti, a nearby star that appears to be immune to Astrophage infection. The mission's goal is to discover why Tau Ceti is unaffected and to find a way to save Earth's Sun. The Hail Mary is powered by Astrophage fuel, which is bred on Earth using heat from nuclear reactors and, later, from massive solar farms called blackpanels built in the Sahara Desert. The ship's hull is lined with Astrophage slurry to protect the crew from radiation, as the organism absorbs all wavelengths of light and particles. The Sun's dimming also forces humanity to take desperate measures to buy time, including detonating 241 nuclear weapons in Antarctica to release methane into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas to slow the cooling. The mission is a suicide mission for the crew, who are placed in medically induced comas for the journey, and the ship carries four beetle probes to send data back to Earth if the crew cannot return.
The Sun's Recovery and Resolution
After the Hail Mary's crew discovers Taumoeba, a natural predator of Astrophage, on the planet Adrian in the Tau Ceti system, they breed a nitrogen-resistant strain that can survive in the atmospheres of Venus and Threeworld. Ryland Grace sends the beetles back to Earth with samples of Taumoeba, and the Eridians, an alien species from the 40 Eridani system, also use the predator to save their own star. Years later, Rocky informs Grace that Earth's Sun has returned to full luminance, confirming that the Taumoeba have successfully eliminated the Astrophage infection. The Sun's recovery marks the end of the crisis and the salvation of humanity, though Grace himself remains on Erid, unable to return to Earth due to food shortages and the long journey.
