Chain

The Chain is a ten-kilometer-long structure made of xenonite links, built by Ryland Grace and the Eridian engineer Rocky to solve a seemingly impossible sampling problem. The Astrophage breeding grounds on the planet Adrian lie ten kilometers into the atmosphere, too deep for the Hail Mary to enter without burning up, and too close for the ship's engines to operate without creating a catastrophic explosion. Grace and Rocky's solution was to build a chain long enough to dangle a sampling device into the breeding zone while the Hail Mary remained at a safe altitude, thrusting at an angle to maintain position without vaporizing the chain with engine exhaust.

Design and Construction

The chain was built from two hundred thousand individual links, each five centimeters long, made of xenonite—a material Rocky could produce by mixing two liquids that set into an almost indestructible solid. Grace used the ship's mill to create aluminum molds for the links, and Rocky produced them in batches, with each new mold increasing the number of links per batch. The construction took two weeks of eight-hour days for both of them, a process Grace found so monotonous that he dreamed of chain every night and saw chain imagery in ordinary objects like spaghetti noodles. The links were designed with a "trap" mechanism that allowed them to be connected without needing to seal each one permanently, making assembly possible but also allowing a winch to later separate them. The completed chain was stored in twenty 500-meter spools mounted to the Hail Mary's hull during multiple EVAs, requiring the centrifuge to be spun down each time.

Deployment and Operation

The chain was deployed while the Hail Mary hovered at a 30-degree angle from vertical, thrusting upward at 1.5 g's to maintain altitude while the chain dangled straight down into Adrian's atmosphere. The ship's engines created a massive infrared glow that heated the atmosphere behind them to the point of ionization, leaving a visible red streak across the sky and causing the external temperature to reach extreme levels. The sampler at the end of the chain, a steel sphere designed by Rocky with a pressure sensor and actuator, successfully sealed a sample of air from the breeding zone at 91.2 kilometers altitude. The retrieval process required Grace to perform an EVA in full gravity, using a specialized winch that separated each link as it pulled the chain up, letting the freed links fall into the planet below to prevent tangling. The operation nearly destroyed the ship when the infrared blowback from the engines melted a hole in the port fuel tank, exposing the Astrophage fuel to Adrian's atmosphere and causing it to migrate toward the planet, generating uncontrolled thrust that spun the ship violently and nearly killed both Grace and Rocky.

Consequences and Significance

The chain's successful deployment and retrieval gave Grace and Rocky the sample they needed to discover Taumoeba, the Astrophage predator that would become the key to saving both Earth and Erid. The damage to the Hail Mary during the operation—the melted fuel tank, the uncontrolled spin, and the injuries to both crew members—was severe but ultimately repairable. The chain itself was consumed during retrieval, with each link falling into Adrian's atmosphere and burning up. The experience demonstrated the extraordinary tensile strength of xenonite, which could support its own weight for ten kilometers under 1.4 g's of gravity, and the ingenuity of Rocky's engineering, which solved a problem that seemed impossible with human technology alone. The chain also became a symbol of the partnership between Grace and Rocky, a physical manifestation of their ability to combine human science with Eridian materials to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
