The Eridians are the intelligent, spacefaring species native to the planet Erid in the 40 Eridani system. They are the first intelligent alien species encountered by humanity, and their sole surviving representative, Rocky, becomes Ryland Grace's closest ally in the shared mission to save both their worlds from the Astrophage infestation. Their civilization, though technologically distinct from humanity's, is advanced enough to build interstellar spacecraft, yet they share a common vulnerability to the Astrophage crisis that threatens both their homeworld and Earth.

Identity and Biology

Eridians are pentagonally symmetrical creatures, roughly the size of a Labrador retriever, with five legs radiating from a central carapace. Each leg ends in a three-fingered hand, giving them five hands for manipulation. Their skin is rocklike, irregular, and bumpy, resembling carved granite. They have no visible eyes or mouth; their primary sense is echolocation, using sound waves to perceive their environment. Their bodies are biological smelters: their carapace is made of oxidized minerals, their bones are honeycombed metallic alloys, their blood is mostly liquid mercury, and their nerves are inorganic silicates transmitting light-based impulses. They have two separate circulatory systems: an ambient system at 210 degrees Celsius and a hot system at 305 degrees Celsius, which powers their steam-driven muscles. They breathe ammonia, not oxygen, and require an atmospheric pressure twenty-nine times that of Earth's. Their homeworld, Erid, is a super-Earth with 8.5 times Earth's mass, double the surface gravity, and a day only 5.1 hours long. Its extremely strong magnetic field and thick atmosphere provide 100 percent radiation protection, meaning Eridians never evolved resistance to radiation and were unaware of its existence until their interstellar voyage.

Life and Plot Trajectory

Eridians developed space travel using their unparalleled materials technology, xenonite, and built a space elevator to reach orbit. However, they never left orbit until the Astrophage crisis forced them to build an interstellar ship, the Blip-A, to travel to Tau Ceti to investigate why that star was unaffected by the Astrophage. The original crew of twenty-three died from radiation sickness during the voyage, leaving only Rocky, the ship's engineer, as the sole survivor. He spent forty-six Earth years alone in the Tau Ceti system before encountering Ryland Grace and the Hail Mary. After forming a partnership with Grace, Rocky helped develop the Taumoeba predator to combat Astrophage, but his own ship's fuel was contaminated by a nitrogen-resistant strain of Taumoeba that could penetrate xenonite. Grace rescued him, and together they returned to Erid, where Rocky's people saved Grace's life by synthesizing human-compatible food from Taumoeba.

Key Actions and Objectives

Rocky's primary objective, shared with Grace, was to find a way to stop the Astrophage infestation that threatened both their homeworlds. He demonstrated exceptional engineering skill, building xenonite structures, life-support systems, and even modifying the Hail Mary's beetle probes to serve as makeshift engines. He also showed remarkable intellectual flexibility, learning English and developing a shared vocabulary with Grace through musical chords. His most critical action was saving Grace's life when the Hail Mary nearly tore itself apart during the Adrian sampling mission, at great risk to his own life.

Rocky's character arc moves from isolated survivor to collaborative hero. After being rescued by Grace, he returns to Erid as a celebrated figure, having helped save his species. He maintains his friendship with Grace, who chooses to remain on Erid rather than attempt the long journey back to Earth. In the epilogue, Rocky is the one who brings Grace the news that Sol has returned to full brightness, confirming that their mission succeeded. He continues to visit Grace regularly, and their friendship endures across the species divide.
