Breeder tanks
The breeder tanks are the central laboratory apparatus through which Grace and Rocky engineer a solution to the Astrophage crisis. After discovering that Taumoeba—a natural predator of Astrophage from the planet Adrian—dies in the presence of even small amounts of nitrogen, Grace realizes that the atmospheres of Venus and Threeworld, where Astrophage breeds, contain lethal levels of nitrogen. Rather than trying to understand the biochemical mechanism, he decides to force evolution: expose successive generations of Taumoeba to gradually increasing nitrogen concentrations and select the survivors. The tanks are the physical system that makes this directed evolution possible.
Design and Construction
Rocky fabricates the breeder tanks from xenonite, the nearly indestructible Eridian material. Each tank is a sealed chamber that can maintain a precise atmospheric composition and temperature. Grace requests ten tanks, each with an accurate gas-injection system that gives him exact control over the nitrogen quantity down to one part per million. Rocky also builds a way for Grace to extract Taumoeba samples without interrupting the experiment. The tanks are arrayed along one side of the Hail Mary's lab, and Grace runs them in parallel: each tank receives a different nitrogen percentage, with Tank One serving as a control at the current generation's known tolerance and Tank Ten receiving the highest, most aggressive dose. The heartiest survivors from the highest-successful tank become the seed for the next generation.
The Evolution Process
Grace begins with natural Taumoeba, which cannot survive any nitrogen at all. Over weeks of continuous breeding—Taumoeba has a doubling time fast enough to consume all the fuel in the Hail Mary's tanks in days—he pushes the tolerance upward in small increments. The spacing between tanks is 0.05 percent nitrogen per generation, an aggressive pace that Grace acknowledges is risky. By the time he reaches Taumoeba-35, the strain can survive 3.5 percent nitrogen at 0.02 atmospheres, matching the conditions on Venus. He continues to Taumoeba-52, then Taumoeba-62, and finally achieves Taumoeba-80, which can handle 8 percent nitrogen—sufficient for both Venus and Threeworld. Rocky, who tracks every generation from his tunnel above the lab, celebrates each milestone with rising pitch and flailing arms.
Unintended Consequences
The success of the breeder tanks has a catastrophic side effect. Grace discovers that Taumoeba-82.5, the final strain, has not only evolved nitrogen resistance but has also learned to worm its way through xenonite itself—the material of the tanks. The microbe uses this ability to hide from nitrogen inside the tank walls, and once the tanks are opened, the Taumoeba escape into the Hail Mary's fuel supply, consuming the Astrophage and leaving the ship dead in space. The same contamination reaches Rocky's ship, the Blip-A, whose fuel tanks are also made of xenonite, stranding him and forcing Grace to abandon his return to Earth in order to rescue his friend. Grace ultimately replaces the xenonite breeder tanks with a new farm made of sheet aluminum and basic milling, which the Taumoeba cannot penetrate.
Narrative and Thematic Significance
The breeder tanks embody the novel's central tension between human ingenuity and the uncontrollable consequences of manipulating alien biology. Grace's method—deliberately accelerating evolution through artificial selection—is a triumph of applied science that saves two worlds, yet it also produces an unforeseen adaptation that nearly destroys the mission. The tanks are a physical manifestation of the principle that evolution works on every problem from every angle, and that any intervention in a living system carries side effects the engineer cannot predict. They also serve as the bond between Grace and Rocky: Rocky builds them, Grace operates them, and together they watch generation after generation, sharing the hope and the frustration that define their partnership.
