The system is approximately 10.5 light-years from Earth, making it one of the closer stellar neighbors. Rocky, the sole surviving Eridian crew member of the Blip-A, confirms that his people call their star by a name that translates to a sequence of musical chords, which Grace cannot pronounce and therefore refers to as "Eridani" for simplicity. The system's proximity to Tau Ceti—about 10 light-years away—is what made it a target for Astrophage infection and, ultimately, the destination for the Hail Mary mission's search for answers.

Planetary Environment and Eridian Biology

The Eridian homeworld, Erid, is a super-Earth with extreme conditions that fundamentally shaped its inhabitants. The infection causes the star to dim, and on Erid, the effects are slower than on Earth because the planet is much hotter, larger, and has a much thicker atmosphere, storing more heat. Rocky estimates that Erid has at least 72 years before major problems arise, compared to Earth's 19 years before half the population dies. The Eridians, like humans, built an interstellar ship—the Blip-A—to travel to Tau Ceti, the only nearby star that remained uninfected, to discover why it was immune. The Blip-A carried a crew of 23, but all except Rocky died from radiation sickness during the voyage because they lacked radiation protection. Rocky survived only because his workshop near the engines was surrounded by Astrophage fuel, which blocked the radiation. The Eridians' lack of knowledge about radiation, due to their planet's perfect natural shielding, was a critical gap in their science.

Connection to the Hail Mary Mission

Epsilon Eridani is the destination for Rocky's return journey after he and Grace successfully breed nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba, the predator that can control Astrophage. Grace calculates the course for Rocky's return to Erid, accounting for relativistic time dilation, and the trip takes under three Earth years from Rocky's perspective. After Grace rescues Rocky from his derelict ship, they travel together to Erid, where Grace lives for many years. The Eridians, grateful for his role in saving their planet, provide him with a life-support dome and synthesize food from his own cloned tissue. It is from Erid that Grace receives the news that Sol has returned to full brightness, confirming that the Taumoeba solution has worked on Earth.
