Irina Petrova
Irina Petrova is the Russian astronomer whose discovery of an anomalous infrared emission in the solar system first alerted humanity to the existence of the Petrova line, the phenomenon that would later be identified as the Astrophage migration route. Her email to an astronomy mailing list, describing a lopsided arc of 25.984-micron-wavelength light rising from the Sun's north pole toward Venus, set in motion the chain of scientific investigation that ultimately revealed the Astrophage threat and led to the Hail Mary mission.
Discovery and the Petrova Line
Doctor Irina Petrova worked at the Pulkovo Observatory in St. Petersburg, Russia. For two years, she had been developing a theory related to infrared emissions from nebulae, which led her to make detailed observations in specific IR bands of light. In the course of this work, she found something odd not in any nebula but within Earth's own solar system: a very faint but detectable line emitting infrared light at the single wavelength of 25.984 microns, with no variance. She created a 3-D model of the data, which revealed the line to be a lopsided arc that rises straight up from the Sun's North Pole for 37 million kilometers, then angles sharply down and away from the Sun toward Venus. After the arc's apex, the cloud widens like a funnel; at Venus, the arc's cross-section is as wide as the planet itself. To confirm her findings, she called in a favor from the Atacama observatory in Chile, which she considered the best IR observatory in the world, and they verified her results.
Initial Hypotheses and the Call for Help
Petrova considered several possible explanations for the IR light. It could be space dust or other particles reflecting sunlight, or some molecular compound absorbing energy and re-emitting it in the infrared band, which would explain why it was all the same wavelength. The shape of the arc particularly interested her. Her first guess was that it was a collection of particles moving along magnetic field lines, but Venus has no magnetic field to speak of—no magnetosphere, no ionosphere, nothing. She asked what forces would make particles arc toward it and why they would glow. Unable to resolve the mystery herself, she wrote to the Astronomy Curiosities mailing list, addressing her fellow professionals and asking for any suggestions or theories. Her email, titled "The Thin Red Line," was sent from her institutional address at the Gaoran Institute.
Narrative Role and Significance
Petrova herself never appears in the main narrative of the Hail Mary mission; her discovery is encountered only as a recovered memory by Ryland Grace, who reads her email while waiting for his breakfast check at Sally's Diner in San Francisco. The memory surfaces when Grace, having just woken from his coma, sees a thin line of blood on the floor and is reminded of the email's title. Her discovery is the first piece of the puzzle that Grace's subconscious prioritizes, and it establishes the foundational mystery that the entire Hail Mary project is built to solve. The phenomenon she identified is named the Petrova line in her honor, and the problem it represents becomes known as the Petrova problem. Her work, confirmed by the Atacama observatory, provided the initial data point that led to the global scientific mobilization against the Astrophage threat.
