The First Spin-Up

This is a humorous moment, but it foreshadows future problems. The Comfort of Gravity Grace enjoys the return of gravity, which allows him to use his lab equipment. The centrifuge becomes a normal part of ship life.

The Adrian Disaster

The Uncontrolled Thrust The Engine Damage While using the main engines to lower the ship into the upper atmosphere of Adrian, the reflected IR light from the engines melts a hole in the fuel tank. The escaping Astrophage are attracted to the planet and produce uncontrolled thrust, spinning the ship wildly. The Intense G-Forces Grace experiences up to 6 g's, and the seat breaks. He is about to suffocate. Rocky, in his own environment, risks his life to enter the human compartment and save Grace. He cuts the seat free, but he is exposed to oxygen and burns his radiator. The Aftermath Grace jettisons the damaged fuel bays to stop the spin. The ship is crippled, but they survive. This conflict is a major turning point, leading to the centrifuge issues later.

The Second Spin-Up

The Risky Maneuver Using Beetles as Engines With the main fuel contaminated, Grace uses the beetles as makeshift engines. They provide thrust but are not designed for attitude control. The ship rotates, and Grace must spin it up to create gravity for lab work. The Danger of Centrifuge Grace spins up the ship while it is still in one piece, causing high g-forces.
