Taumoeba and Venus·Threeworld's engineered relationship

The engineered relationship between Taumoeba and the planets Venus and Threeworld is the central scientific solution of Project Hail Mary: a predator microbe, native to the Tau Ceti system, is artificially evolved to tolerate the nitrogen concentrations in the atmospheres of Venus and Threeworld so that it can be deployed to consume the Astrophage that is dimming Earth's sun and threatening Erid's star.

Discovery and Initial Failure

Ryland Grace and Rocky discovered Taumoeba, a natural predator of Astrophage, in the atmosphere of the planet Adrian, the homeworld of Astrophage in the Tau Ceti system. The predator-prey relationship was immediately evident: Taumoeba enveloped and consumed Astrophage cells, and the population balance on Adrian explained why that star had not been dimmed by Astrophage. However, when Grace attempted to deploy natural Taumoeba against the Astrophage breeding grounds on Venus and Threeworld, the microbes died within seconds. The cause was nitrogen: Venus's upper atmosphere contains 3.5 percent nitrogen, and Threeworld's contains 8 percent, both at the 0.02-atmosphere pressure where Astrophage breed. Natural Taumoeba, evolved in Adrian's nitrogen-free air, could not survive even trace amounts of the gas.

Directed Evolution for Nitrogen Resistance

Grace and Rocky devised a plan to breed nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba through artificial selection. Rocky built ten xenonite breeder tanks with precise gas-injection systems, and Grace subjected successive generations of Taumoeba to incrementally higher nitrogen concentrations. The process was methodical: each generation that survived a given nitrogen level became the parent stock for the next, with the nitrogen percentage increased by 0.05 percent increments across the tanks. After many generations, the strain designated Taumoeba-35 could survive the 3.5 percent nitrogen of Venus's atmosphere. The work continued until Taumoeba-80, which could tolerate 8 percent nitrogen, sufficient for Threeworld. Grace later pushed further to Taumoeba-82.5, adding a safety margin.

Unintended Consequence: Xenonite Permeability

The evolution of nitrogen resistance came with a critical side effect. Taumoeba-82.5 had also evolved the ability to work its way through xenonite, the alien material Rocky used for the breeder tanks. Grace discovered this when the Taumoeba escaped the xenonite farms and contaminated his fuel supply, eating the Astrophage and leaving the Hail Mary dead in space. He confirmed the mechanism experimentally: Taumoeba-82.5 could pass through xenonite discs to reach Astrophage on the other side, while natural Taumoeba could not. The microbe had evolved to hide from nitrogen by burrowing into the xenonite walls, and this unintended trait made the xenonite farms themselves a vector for contamination.

Deployment and Success

Despite the contamination crisis, Grace successfully deployed the solution. He launched the four beetle probes toward Earth, each carrying a mini-farm made of Eridian steel—a material Taumoeba-82.5 could not penetrate—containing a colony of the evolved microbe. The beetles carried Grace's data and the Taumoeba to Earth's solar system. Years later, Rocky brought news from Erid's astronomers: Sol had returned to full luminance. The Taumoeba had been released into Venus's atmosphere, where they consumed the Astrophage breeding there, breaking the cycle of solar dimming. The engineered relationship between Taumoeba and the two planets was complete: a predator, reshaped by human and Eridian science, had saved both worlds.
