The deep friendship between Meriadoc and King Théoden of Rohan, formed in the short time they knew each other.

The Meeting

The Meeting The Offer of Service Merry offers his sword to Théoden, and the king accepts him as an esquire. Théoden treats him with kindness. The Ride Together They ride to Helm's Deep and later to Dunharrow. Merry sits at the king's table and learns from him. The Growing Affection Théoden calls Merry 'Master Holbytla' and shows him fatherly affection. Merry is deeply loyal.

The Battle of the Pelennor

The Battle of the Pelennor The Disobedience Merry disobeys orders and rides with Dernhelm (Éowyn) to the battle. He is determined to be at Théoden's side. The Death of Théoden Théoden is killed by the Witch-king. Merry is devastated but helps Éowyn kill the Witch-king. The Final Farewell Before dying, Théoden speaks to Merry, forgiving him and thanking him for his service. Merry weeps.

The Memory

The Memory The Grief Merry never forgets Théoden. He smokes his pipe but thinks of the king. The Horn of the Mark Éowyn gives Merry the horn of the Mark as a gift. He keeps it as a memento of Théoden. The Legacy Merry becomes a hero of the Shire, but his bond with Théoden shapes his character. He is known as 'Holdwine' in Rohan.
