S.R. 1418

S.R. 1418 is the pivotal year in the Shire Reckoning during which the long-dormant conflict of the Third Age erupts into open war. It begins in the Shire with Bilbo Baggins's eleventy-first birthday party on September 22, an event that sets in motion the transfer of the One Ring to Frodo Baggins. The year is marked by the gradual revelation of the Ring's true nature, the pursuit of the Ring-bearer by the Nazgûl, and the formation of the Fellowship of the Ring at the Council of Elrond in Rivendell. The Fellowship departs from Rivendell on December 25, and the year ends with the breaking of the Fellowship at Amon Hen on February 26 of the following year (S.R. 1419). Throughout S.R. 1418, the Shadow of Mordor lengthens, Saruman's treachery is exposed, and the forces of Sauron begin their coordinated assault on the West.

The Opening of the Year: The Shire and the Ring's Awakening

The year opens with the Shire in a state of deceptive peace. Bilbo Baggins, now 111 years old, announces a party of "special magnificence" for his birthday, an event that draws widespread attention and speculation. The party itself, held on September 22, is the occasion for Bilbo's sudden disappearance using the Ring, a moment that Gandalf later identifies as the first clear sign of the Ring's corrupting influence. In the days following the party, Gandalf reveals to Frodo the true history of the One Ring: its forging by Sauron, its loss by Isildur, its discovery by Gollum, and its eventual arrival in Bilbo's hands. The wizard's account, delivered in the chapter "The Shadow of the Past," establishes the Ring as the Ruling Ring of Sauron, a weapon of immense power that must be destroyed. This revelation transforms Frodo's life and sets the course for the entire year.

The Flight from the Shire and the Pursuit

By late September, Frodo resolves to leave the Shire, selling Bag End to the Sackville-Bagginses and departing with Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took. The journey is immediately shadowed by the appearance of the Black Riders, the Nazgûl, who have crossed the River Anduin and entered Eriador in search of the Ring. The hobbits' flight takes them through the Old Forest, where they encounter Tom Bombadil, and across the Barrow-downs, where they are captured by a Barrow-wight but rescued by Bombadil. They reach Bree on September 29, where they meet Aragorn, the Ranger who becomes their guide. The pursuit intensifies as the Nazgûl attack the inn at Bree and later assault the hobbits' camp on Weathertop on October 6, wounding Frodo with a Morgul-knife. The flight continues to the Ford of Bruinen, where a flood conjured by Elrond and Gandalf sweeps away the pursuing Riders, allowing Frodo to cross into Rivendell on October 20.

The Council of Elrond and the Formation of the Fellowship

Frodo recovers in Rivendell, and on October 25 the Council of Elrond convenes. This gathering brings together representatives of the Free Peoples: Elves, Dwarves, and Men, including Boromir of Gondor, who brings news of the war against Mordor. The Council hears the full history of the Ring, including Saruman's betrayal and Gollum's escape from Mirkwood. The decision is made to destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom in Mordor. Frodo volunteers to be the Ring-bearer, and the Fellowship of the Ring is formed, consisting of nine companions: Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, and Gimli. The Fellowship departs from Rivendell on December 25, beginning the journey south.

The Journey South and the Breaking of the Fellowship

The Fellowship's journey through the latter part of S.R. 1418 is marked by a series of escalating perils. Their attempt to cross the Misty Mountains via the Redhorn Gate is thwarted by a blizzard, likely conjured by Caradhras itself. Forced to take the dark road through Moria, they are attacked by Orcs and a Balrog; Gandalf falls into the abyss while battling the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. The survivors emerge into Lothlórien, where they are welcomed by Celeborn and Galadriel. After a period of rest, they depart down the Anduin River. The year ends with the Fellowship reaching the falls of Rauros on February 25, S.R. 1419. The next day, Boromir succumbs to the Ring's temptation and attempts to take it from Frodo, who flees and decides to continue the quest alone. The Fellowship is broken: Boromir is killed defending Merry and Pippin, who are captured by Orcs; Frodo and Sam cross the river into the eastern lands; and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli set out in pursuit of the captives. S.R. 1418 thus closes with the quest scattered and the war fully joined.
