Last Bridge

The Last Bridge, called in the Elvish tongue the Bridge of Mitheithel, is the only crossing of the River Hoarwell (Mitheithel) for many leagues, spanning the river where the ancient East Road descends from the high moors into the eastern reaches of Eriador. It is a structure of three great arches, built by the Men of Gondor in the days of the North Kingdom, and it stands as a solitary landmark in a region that has long fallen into wilderness and watchfulness.

Geography and Strategic Importance

The bridge lies at the bottom of a short, steep slope where the Road, after leaving the high country west of the Misty Mountains, crosses the Hoarwell before continuing eastward toward the Ford of Bruinen and Rivendell. The river at this point is swift and deep, and the bridge is the only practical passage for many miles, making it a natural chokepoint for any traveller journeying east or west. The surrounding country is barren and cheerless, with ancient walls of stone and ruined towers on the heights, remnants of the long-vanished North Kingdom. The bridge itself is a work of sturdy masonry, its three arches still sound after centuries of neglect.

The Crossing of the Fellowship

The Company of the Ring, led by Aragorn, reached the Last Bridge on the sixth day after leaving Weathertop, having been forced to return to the Road after traversing the barren hills. They approached with great caution, dreading to find Black Riders waiting in ambush. Aragorn went forward alone to scout, and found no sign of the enemy, but he did discover a pale-green jewel, a beryl or elf-stone, lying in the mud in the middle of the bridge. He took this as a token that they might pass safely, and the Company crossed without incident, hearing only the sound of the water swirling against the arches. This crossing marked a significant milestone: they had passed the last major obstacle before the Ford of Bruinen and the relative safety of Rivendell.

Glorfindel's Token and the Pursuit

The elf-stone found by Aragorn was later revealed to have been left by Glorfindel, the Elf-lord sent from Rivendell to search for the Ring-bearer. Glorfindel had come to the bridge some seven days earlier and had encountered three of the Nine Riders there; they withdrew before him, and he pursued them westward. The jewel was a deliberate sign, a message of hope and a confirmation that the path was clear, at least for a time. After crossing, the Company turned aside from the Road, entering a narrow ravine that led northward into the dark and threatening country of the Trollshaws, leaving the bridge behind as a boundary between the open lands and the deeper shadows ahead.

Narrative Significance

The Last Bridge functions as a threshold in the narrative of the Fellowship. It is the last point on the East Road where the Company can travel openly before being forced into the cover of the hills and forests. The finding of the elf-stone provides a moment of reassurance in a journey increasingly fraught with peril, and it serves as a tangible link to the unseen allies—Elrond and Glorfindel—who are working to aid them from afar. The bridge itself, a relic of a lost age, stands as a silent witness to the passage of the Company and the beginning of the most dangerous leg of their journey to Rivendell.
