Círdan

Círdan the Shipwright is one of the most ancient and venerable of the Elves remaining in Middle-earth, a figure whose presence, though largely offstage in the events of the War of the Ring, anchors the story's deepest historical and spiritual currents. As the Lord of the Grey Havens, he is the keeper of the last seaward gate from Middle-earth to the Uttermost West, a role that makes him the final custodian of the Elves' long and fading sojourn in mortal lands. His epithet, the Shipwright, marks him as the master of the craft that alone can carry the weary and the blessed across the Sundering Seas, a function that becomes decisive in the closing moments of the Third Age. In the narrative of the Ring's destruction and the departure of the Ring-bearers, Círdan stands as the quiet, ancient figure who completes the journey that began with the forging of the Rings themselves, a living link to the Elder Days and to the hope that lies beyond the reach of the Shadow.
