Berta

Woodwalkers

Berta is a grizzly shapeshifter at Clearwater High whose enormous bear form makes her a memorable partner in training and a source of shelter in play. Her story balances comic mishap with visible progress: a transformation once burst a closet apart, but later she learned to take her animal form, display its formidable claws, and defeat Jeffrey in a human fighting examination.

Identity and First Impressions

Berta is first introduced through the recollections of other students rather than through a dramatic entrance of her own. Nell describes a past incident in which Berta, for reasons Nell can no longer remember, hid in a wall closet. Berta entered it in human form and transformed inside; the closet exploded. The mishap was substantial enough that students continued finding splinters throughout the school for days, and Holly recalled that the bang had been heard throughout the building. The story establishes transformation as a physical skill that can go badly wrong, while giving Berta an early, distinctly comic place in school life.

When Brandon points Berta out at another table, she looks like an ordinary, friendly girl. Her appearance gives no obvious indication that she can become a grizzly, and Carag is surprised to learn what she is. The impression that she lives on pizza and candy adds to the contrast between her unremarkable cafeteria presence and the immense animal body associated with her second form. Berta is therefore introduced through a mismatch between what classmates can see at first glance and the power her transformation makes available.

Learning to Transform

Berta’s earlier closet accident does not define the limits of her ability. In a later exercise, students practise transforming while putting one another under pressure, and those still struggling receive individual help from their teacher, Lou Ellwood. Berta manages to assume the animal form she has only just learned to know. Her progress is presented among the class’s varied levels of confidence rather than as an effortless feat: the exercise tests students at different stages, and Berta’s successful transformation marks a concrete step forward.

Her response to that new form is delighted and playful. Berta examines her long claws and wonders whether they would look good with nail polish. The contrast is characteristic of the scene: the claws are evidence of a large predator’s physical equipment, yet she treats them as something to admire and accessorize. The moment makes her achievement legible without turning it into solemn triumph. Her growing command of transformation comes with curiosity and humor as well as force.

Strength, Training, and Companionship

During a fighting lesson, Bill Brighteye assigns Carag to Berta, explaining that she is stronger than he is and telling him to do what he can. The pairing makes the difference in their physical strength explicit before the exercise begins. Berta struggles somewhat as she takes the form of a giant, golden-brown bear, so the scene does not suggest that her transformation is always easy; nevertheless, she reaches the form and approaches her assigned partner. She opens her mouth to show Carag canines as long as a finger, presenting her new bear body with evident pride.

The training pairing frames Berta as a formidable opponent for a less powerful classmate, but not simply as a threat. The focus is on practice under a teacher’s direction, with students learning through encounters between differently sized and differently capable bodies. Berta’s size is relevant to the challenge Carag faces; her own effort to transform is also visible. Together, those details show her strength as a practical fact of school training, while leaving room for her to be a learner rather than only an embodiment of power.

Berta’s broad back also becomes protective in the school’s snowball fight. Dorian, bundled in human clothes, hides behind her grizzly form to shield himself from Holly’s hard throws. Berta’s body serves as cover in a playful contest, turning the size that makes her a formidable combat partner into a source of support for another student. The scene places her within the school’s social life through a small, concrete act of shelter, not through a speech or formal display of leadership.

Examination and Consequences

At the school’s fighting and transformation examination, Berta is paired with Jeffrey to demonstrate human fighting techniques. She wins, and Jeffrey is visibly displeased by the defeat. The result gives Berta a distinct success in a setting where students must demonstrate their abilities, and it complicates any simple expectation that her bear strength alone determines how she performs: this test specifically calls for human fighting techniques. She and Jeffrey both pass, so her victory does not remove him from the school or resolve the hostility surrounding him.

Their shared success has a consequence for Carag. Because Jeffrey also passes, Carag expects that he will have to put up with the entire wolf pack for another year. Berta’s examination result is thus part of a larger class outcome: she wins her bout, while Jeffrey’s continued place at school sustains the conflict Carag anticipates. The scene distinguishes individual achievement from its wider effects; a satisfying victory over a rival does not, by itself, change the group’s presence.

Role in the School Community

Across these episodes, Berta is characterized by a contrast between awkwardness and capability. The closet that bursts apart records the hazards of transformation; the claws she admires and the bear form she can now assume show development; her victory over Jeffrey demonstrates competence in a different kind of test. The evidence does not make her a central strategist or assign her a larger objective. Instead, she emerges as a student whose progress is observed in class, whose strength shapes training, and whose physical presence can serve her classmates as readily as it can challenge them.

That combination gives Berta a useful place in the school’s wider picture of shapeshifter life. Students do not all master their animal forms at the same pace, and their bodies carry very different kinds of strength. Berta’s scenes make that variation concrete: she can be the subject of a remembered transformation disaster, a newly successful learner, a powerful sparring partner, a shield in a snowball fight, and the winner of an examination bout. Her trajectory is modest but clear, moving from a conspicuous mishap toward greater control and demonstrated skill without erasing the humor and companionship that accompany her at school.
