Theo
WoodwalkersTheo is a caretaker at Clearwater High whose encounters with Carag reveal both his familiarity with the school’s shapeshifter community and his practical role in assessing students. He appears as a large, antlered figure and becomes a test opponent in an examination of special-case behavior, where Carag’s ability to approach unseen earns Theo’s particular approval.
Identity and Role
Theo is identified as the school’s caretaker. When Carag returns to Clearwater High on foot, Theo is waiting near the entrance: Carag notices his massive silhouette and branching antlers before hearing his voice in his mind. Their exchange is telepathic, and Theo’s teasing question about whether the vehicle had broken down shows that he is comfortable addressing Carag informally.
Examination and Assessment
During the special-case behavior examination, Theo plays a tourist who has found Carag’s belongings in a forest hiding place and taken them. Carag waits until Theo is distracted, sneaks up, and retrieves the possessions. The exercise tests stealth through a concrete scenario rather than a written answer: the student must recover what was taken without being noticed.
Bridger praises Carag’s approach and asks whether Theo detected him. Theo says that he did not even smell the boy, calling him an able young puma. His response confirms that Carag’s success was not merely a matter of catching Theo’s attention elsewhere; Carag concealed his scent as well as his movements. Theo therefore serves as a knowledgeable evaluator whose firsthand report gives weight to the exam’s demonstration of Carag’s developing animal skills.
Relationship with Carag
Theo’s interactions with Carag combine familiarity with instruction. His playful remark when Carag returns late contrasts with the deliberate test he conducts for the examination, but both encounters place him in the role of an observant adult within the school community. He recognizes Carag as a young puma and assesses him by the senses and standards relevant to that identity.
