Yuan Si

Analects

Yuan Si is a disciple of Confucius whose brief appearance in the text makes the distribution of grain a question of ethical use. When Confucius gives him an allowance of nine hundred measures, Yuan Si declines it; Confucius tells him not to refuse, but to distribute it among the surrounding communities.

Identity and Introduction

The text identifies Yuan Si as a man appointed by Confucius to govern a town. It gives no further account of his background or career, so his characterization rests on this administrative role and a compact exchange about his grain allowance.

The Grain Allowance

Confucius assigns Yuan Si nine hundred measures of grain, and Yuan Si declines them. The refusal is the only action attributed directly to Yuan Si in the episode; the account does not explain his reason or describe what he does afterward.

Confucius answers by redirecting attention from refusal to distribution. Yuan Si should accept the grain and give it to people in the neighborhoods, hamlets, towns, and villages. The response frames the allowance not simply as personal compensation, but as a resource that can be put to use beyond its recipient.

Ethical and Political Significance

The exchange connects an official’s provision with the welfare of local communities. Confucius does not praise rejecting material support as an end in itself; instead, he proposes that Yuan Si turn what he receives toward people around him. In this brief scene, ethical conduct is measured through the practical circulation of resources as well as the recipient’s personal restraint.

Yuan Si’s small role also reflects the text’s broader attention to the responsibilities attached to government. He is introduced through a public appointment, and the allowance episode makes that position visible in concrete terms: grain moves from the teacher who assigns it to the official who receives it, and is then meant to reach the surrounding population. The text leaves the outcome unstated, preserving the exchange as advice rather than a narrated act of redistribution.
