The Confrontation at Flourish and Blotts

After Lockhart's announcement, the Weasleys and Harry encounter the Malfoys in Flourish and Blotts. Draco Malfoy taunts Ron about his family's poverty, and Lucius Malfoy insults Arthur Weasley's job and the Grangers for being Muggles. The tension escalates into a physical fight between Arthur and Lucius, which Hagrid breaks up. During the scuffle, Lucius slips Ginny Weasley's old Transfiguration book back into her cauldron, a seemingly minor act that will have major consequences. The incident leaves the Weasleys humiliated and angry, and Harry feels a deep animosity toward the Malfoys. The confrontation underscores the class and blood-status tensions that will drive much of the year's conflict.
