Prompted by Hermione's questions, Professor Binns reluctantly tells the class the legend of the Chamber of Secrets. He explains that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by four great wizards: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. Slytherin, who believed only pure-blood wizards should be taught, left the school after a disagreement but supposedly built a hidden chamber. The legend says that only Slytherin's true heir can open the Chamber and unleash a monster to purge the school of Muggle-borns. Binns dismisses the story as nonsense, but the students are deeply unsettled, and the tale becomes the central mystery of the year.
