Lydia and Wickham's Marriage is Arranged

Mr. Gardiner writes to Mr. Bennet with the news that Lydia and Wickham have been found and that a marriage has been arranged. The terms are surprisingly generous, and Mr. Bennet suspects that his brother-in-law has paid a large sum to make it happen. The family is relieved that Lydia's reputation will be saved, though the marriage is clearly a poor one. Elizabeth, however, soon learns from Mrs. Gardiner's letter that it was Darcy, not her uncle, who orchestrated the entire affair.
