Wickham is Absent from the Ball

At the Netherfield ball, Elizabeth is dismayed to find that Wickham is not present. His friend Denny hints that he stayed away to avoid Darcy. Elizabeth's disappointment turns to anger against Darcy, whom she blames for Wickham's absence. Her mood is further soured by having to dance the first two dances with the awkward Mr. Collins. The ball, which she had anticipated with pleasure, becomes a trial of her patience and composure.
