Wickham's Story of Darcy's Injustice
At a party at Mrs. Phillips's house, Elizabeth has a long conversation with Wickham. He tells her a compelling story of how Darcy, out of jealousy and pride, cheated him out of a valuable living promised by the late Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth, already prejudiced against Darcy, readily believes Wickham's account and is filled with indignation. This conversation solidifies her negative opinion of Darcy and her sympathy for Wickham, setting up a major obstacle to any future relationship between her and Darcy.
