Len Pagett
ShrineLen Pagett is Alice Pagett’s father and Molly Pagett’s husband, a guarded and uneasy presence around the church’s involvement with his daughter. His brief appearance at the convent service places him between Alice and the clergy’s efforts to protect and guide her, while leaving his own beliefs and intentions only partly defined.
Family Position and the Convent
When Father Hagan explains that Alice and Molly Pagett have been asked to stay at the convent for a few days, he describes Molly as a devout Catholic who is willing to follow the clergy’s guidance. Len, by contrast, is the obstacle he anticipates: Father Hagan doubts that he will allow Alice to remain there for long. The exchange establishes a difference in the parents’ responses to the church, but does not establish Len’s religious affiliation; a question about whether he is Catholic receives no definitive answer in the available scene.
Arrival at the Service
Len arrives at the convent service with Alice. His suit is ill-fitting and worn, though recently dry-cleaned, and he looks across the room toward the chapel with trepidation and resentment. He stands back as Alice enters, then mutters something that prompts her to move more quickly into the room. The account shows him bringing his daughter into the gathering, but offers little explanation of what he says or what he expects from the service.
Relationship to Alice and the Church
Alice appears nervous as she enters, while Len’s resentment and Father Hagan’s doubts frame the family’s uneasy relationship with the clergy. Molly follows Alice and urges her onward into the chapel; Len’s presence is therefore part of a family scene in which the adults accompany the child but do not respond to the church in the same way. The episode gives Len no extended confrontation or stated motive. His significance rests in that tension: he is Alice’s father, present at a religious service, yet regarded by Father Hagan as unlikely to accept the convent’s care for her for long.
