Johnny goes to a store to buy supplies, including peroxide. He insists they cut and bleach their hair to avoid identification. Ponyboy is devastated to lose his long hair, a greaser trademark. Johnny cuts his own hair and washes out the grease. They look completely different and feel like strangers to themselves.
