Ponyboy's struggle with grief

Ponyboy's grades slip, and he stops eating. He becomes absent-minded and gets into fights. His English teacher, Mr. Syme, offers him a chance to pass if he writes a good semester theme. Ponyboy struggles to find a topic. He reads Johnny's note, which urges him to "stay gold" and tell Dally to look at a sunset.
