Briony Abandons the Play

During another frustrating rehearsal, Briony suddenly walks out without explanation. She is overwhelmed by the failure of her play and the realization that she cannot control the other actors. She wanders outside, first to the island temple, where she takes out her frustration by slashing nettles with a hazel switch, imagining each nettle represents a person or idea she wants to destroy—Lola, the twins, playwriting itself, and even her own childhood. This violent act is a form of self-purification, a symbolic attempt to shed her old self and become a 'real writer.' Afterward, she stands on the bridge, waiting for something significant to happen, challenging existence to dispel her insignificance. This event marks Briony's conscious rejection of her childish fantasies and her entry into a more complex, and dangerous, emotional world.
