The Twins Run Away

Jackson and Pierrot, feeling neglected and homesick, leave a note saying they are running away and then slip out of the house. Their disappearance throws the household into chaos. Search parties are organized, with Leon, Cecilia, Paul Marshall, Briony, and Robbie all heading out into the dark grounds. The twins' flight is a childish act of rebellion, but it has serious consequences. It provides the cover of darkness and the dispersal of the adults, creating the conditions for the assault on Lola. It also gives Briony the opportunity to be alone with her thoughts and to solidify her resolve against Robbie.
