1940, Part Three
Briony's Nursing Training
Part Three follows Briony Tallis as a trainee nurse at a London hospital. She has abandoned her plans to attend Cambridge and has chosen a life of service and penance. The work is grueling, the discipline harsh, and she is constantly terrified of Sister Drummond, the ward sister. Briony's days are filled with menial tasks—scrubbing floors, emptying bedpans, and learning the strict protocols of nursing. This life is a form of self-imposed punishment, a way to atone for her crime. The hospital setting also brings her into direct contact with the suffering caused by the war, which deepens her understanding of the consequences of her actions.
