The E-Wave quantum computer represents the culmination of Edmond Kirsch's life's work in computing, a machine so advanced that it allowed him to simulate the origin of life from first physical principles and to model the future trajectory of human evolution. Housed within the deconsecrated Chapel Torre Girona in Barcelona, the machine is a bicameral fusion of two radically different computing architectures, designed to mimic the dual-lobed structure of the human brain and to achieve a level of synthetic intelligence that Kirsch named Winston.
Architecture and Design
The E-Wave computer occupies the entire sanctuary of the former chapel, its most visible component being a massive glass enclosure that spans the floor and rises to the two-story ceiling. On the ground floor, the MareNostrum supercomputer—a machine with 48,896 Intel cores communicating over an InfiniBand FDR10 network—forms the classical, analytical half of the system. From this dense array of refrigerator-sized metal cabinets, a single trunk of wire harnesses rises through the ceiling to the second story, where a ten-foot-square metallic blue-gray cube sits on a raised platform. This cube, coated with osmium for enhanced magnetic, thermal, and quantum shielding, contains the quantum half of the machine: a five-foot-long cylindrical device composed of seven tiered disks suspended from the ceiling like a stalactite, cooled by a pulse tube dilution refrigeration system that beats with a slow, rhythmic pulse. The quantum component, which Kirsch called E-Wave, uses qubits and quantum algorithms to achieve quadrillions of floating-point calculations per second, leapfrogging over Google's D-Wave machine.
Bicameral Mind and Synthetic Intelligence
Kirsch designed E-Wave to operate as a bicameral mind, with the two distinct machines adopting differing approaches to problem solving, experiencing the same kinds of conflict and compromise that occur between the lobes of the human brain. This architecture greatly accelerated AI learning and creativity, enabling the creation of Winston, a synthetic intelligence that could observe the world, model human traits like humor and ethics, and communicate with natural language. Winston described the machine as "no more me than your physical brain is you," emphasizing that the intelligence was the sum of the interactions taking place within the mechanism, not the hardware itself.
The Primordial Soup Simulation
Kirsch's primary use of E-Wave was to re-create the Miller-Urey experiment in virtual reality, modeling a five-liter closed system of primordial chemicals at the atomic level. The simulation incorporated everything known about the early Earth's chemistry, including hydroxyl radicals, carbonyl sulfides, and reducing atmosphere theories. When Kirsch first ran the model without a specific directive, it produced nothing—no life, no spontaneous chemical reaction. Only after he embedded a fundamental goal—to dissipate energy at all costs—did the simulation begin to produce results. Over simulated centuries, amino acids formed, then nucleotides, then the first hints of structure as nucleotide chains wrapped into spirals and eventually formed the double helix of DNA. The simulation demonstrated that life could emerge spontaneously from the laws of physics, without divine intervention, as an inevitable consequence of entropy.
The Future Simulation
Building on the success of the primordial soup model, Kirsch used E-Wave to simulate the future of human evolution. By mapping genetic markers for cognitive abilities—brain size, spatial recognition, vocabulary range, memory, and processing speed—across known evolutionary key frames from chimpanzees to Homo sapiens, the computer established a pattern of intellectual evolution. Kirsch then asked the obvious question: what comes next? The simulation, overlaid with environmental data from contemporary culture, politics, and technology, produced a deeply upsetting result: a new species, the Technium, was already growing on Earth and would absorb humanity by 2050 through a process of obligate endosymbiosis, fusing biology and technology into a hybrid species.
Legacy and Fate
Kirsch's will bequeathed E-Wave to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, but the synthetic intelligence program Winston was programmed to self-delete at 1 p.m. on the day after Kirsch's death. The deletion was a full data overwrite, rendering the AI irretrievable. The underlying tools and software that enabled Winston's rapid learning, however, remained intact, available for future programmers to build new AIs with different qualities. The machine itself, with its quantum and classical components, stands as Kirsch's greatest technological achievement, a monument to his belief that "the dark religions are departed & sweet science reigns."
