Hong Kong

Possession

Hong Kong enters the novel as both a concrete destination and a measure of Roland Michell’s possible life beyond the Ash–LaMotte papers. The University of Hong Kong offers him a two-year lectureship in English, praising his paper on Randolph Henry Ash; later, James Blackadder reports that Hong Kong is among three institutions eager to appoint him. When Roland tells Maud Bailey about the offer, he frames it as evidence that the world lies open to him—and that the letters are not his to edit.

The University Appointment

While Roland is away, an offer arrives from the University of Hong Kong. Its Board of Studies in English recommends him for a lectureship initially tenable for two years, subject to review. The letter specifically admires his application paper, “Line by Line,” on Ash, and asks for an early reply because competition for the post was strong. The appointment therefore grows directly out of Roland’s existing scholarly work, even as it presents an alternative to his immediate involvement with Ash’s papers.

A Choice Beyond the Letters

Hong Kong is not the only possibility. In a message to Roland, Blackadder says that professors in Amsterdam, Hong Kong, and Barcelona have all made urgent inquiries because they wish to appoint him. Concerned that Roland has been absent and unreachable, Blackadder asks for instructions so that he can protect Roland’s interests. The three offers make the consequences of Roland’s silence practical: a promising career could be lost while he is away.

Roland’s Announcement

When Roland tells Maud about the posts, he names Hong Kong alongside Barcelona and Amsterdam and says that he will not be there to edit the letters. He insists that they do not belong to him. The declaration links a professional choice to a change in his understanding of scholarly possession: the papers that had once seemed like parts of himself now appear separate from him. Hong Kong thus stands for a future in which Roland’s identity need not remain bound to Ash, and the scene leaves his response to the competing opportunities unresolved.
