The boys reach the GS&WM trestle over the Castle River. Despite their fear, they decide to cross it rather than take a longer detour. While crossing, Gordon feels the rail vibrate and realizes a train is coming. He screams a warning, and he and Vern barely make it to safety as the train roars past. The experience is terrifying but exhilarating.
