Setting Off on the Tracks

The four boys—Gordon, Chris, Teddy, and Vern—begin their journey along the GS&WM railroad tracks. They cross Beeman's field and climb the cindery embankment, with the sun beating down and the heat oppressive. They have little money and no food, but they are united by the thrill of the adventure and the promise of finding the dead boy.
