Teabing keeps his white Hawker 731 jet—which he calls "Elizabeth"—in a private hangar at Biggin Hill, and he pays for special privileges that allow him to bypass standard customs procedures. The airport is where Teabing, Langdon, and Sophie Neveu land after their desperate flight from Le Bourget Airfield in Paris, carrying the keystone and the bound albino monk Silas in the cargo hold.
The Police Trap and Teabing's Countermove
When Bezu Fache learns from Le Bourget that Teabing's plane has taken off for Biggin Hill, he orders the Kent local police to surround the hangar and prevent anyone from deplaning. The Kent police chief inspector, acting on Fache's authority, instructs the air traffic controller to radio the pilot with a fabricated story about a gas leak at the pumping station, directing the plane to the terminal instead of Teabing's hangar. The pilot initially agrees, but Teabing, sensing the ruse, orders the pilot to land at the hangar anyway. The police race across the tarmac in pursuit, but the Hawker taxies into the hangar and completes its 180-degree turn before the officers arrive.
The Deception at the Hangar
When the Kent police chief inspector confronts Teabing at the hangar, demanding to search the plane for fugitives, Teabing refuses to allow a warrantless search and instead offers a compromise: let Simon Edwards, the Biggin Hill Executive Services Officer who knows Teabing well, act as an intermediary and inspect the aircraft. The inspector rejects this and insists on searching the plane himself. When he boards the Hawker, he finds it empty—Langdon, Sophie, and Silas have already slipped out during the plane's turn and hidden behind Teabing's Jaguar stretch limousine in the hangar. The inspector is forced to let Teabing and his manservant Rémy Legaludec leave in the limousine, and the police convoy departs empty-handed.
Consequences and Significance
Teabing's successful deception at Biggin Hill buys the group critical time: Fache is left believing Langdon and Sophie are still in France, while they are actually driving into London to decipher the keystone's final clue at the Temple Church. The airport episode also reveals the extent of Teabing's influence and cunning—he uses his knighthood and wealth to manipulate the situation, and his willingness to deceive the police foreshadows his later betrayal.
