In the novel, it functions as the primary artery through which Sophie Neveu drives the stolen SmartCar after escaping the Louvre, and it becomes the stage for a decisive moment in their flight from the French police.

Car Chase and Escape Route

After Sophie and Langdon flee the Louvre through an emergency stairwell and dash across the plaza to her red SmartCar, Sophie guns the vehicle up the Champs-Élysées, weaving through sparse traffic. The two-tone police sirens blare behind them, and Langdon sees the lights in his side-view mirror. Sophie accelerates, flicking her headlights as she steals a quick glance both ways before flooring the accelerator through an empty intersection onto Rivoli, then banking right around a wide rotary and shooting out onto the wide avenue. As they straighten out, Langdon turns in his seat and sees the sea of blue lights assembling at the museum, not chasing them. Sophie's eyes remain fixed ahead down the long thoroughfare, and Langdon settles into his seat, believing the embassy is only about a mile away.

Blockade and Reversal

The sense of safety is shattered when Sophie, driving up the Champs-Élysées, suddenly slams on the brakes and skids to a halt. Langdon points down the long street before them, and Sophie sees a hundred yards ahead that the intersection is blocked by a couple of DCPJ police cars parked askew. Langdon gives a grim sigh, realizing the embassy is off-limits. Down the street, the two DCPJ officers stare in their direction. Sophie puts the SmartCar in reverse, performs a composed three-point turn, and reverses her direction. As she drives away, she hears squealing tires and sirens blare to life. Cursing, she slams down the accelerator, and the SmartCar tears through the diplomatic quarter, weaving past embassies and consulates, finally racing out a side street and taking a right turn back onto the massive thoroughfare of Champs-Élysées.

Narrative Significance

The Champs-Élysées sequence marks the moment when Langdon and Sophie's escape plan collapses. The avenue, which initially seemed to offer a clear path to safety at the U.S. Embassy, becomes a trap when the police seal off the intersection. This reversal forces Sophie to abandon the embassy plan and improvise a new route, leading to the train station escape. The avenue's grand, open character contrasts sharply with the claustrophobic danger of the police blockade, and the chase along its length underscores the fugitives' vulnerability in the heart of Paris. The scene also demonstrates Sophie's quick thinking and driving skill, as she manages to lose the police temporarily before the blockade forces her to change course.
