Derived from the Fibonacci sequence—a progression in which each term equals the sum of the two preceding terms—PHI emerges when adjacent terms are divided, producing a ratio that approaches 1.618. Robert Langdon, a Harvard professor of religious symbology, introduces PHI to his students as "the most beautiful number in the universe," explaining that its presence in the natural world—from the spiral of a nautilus shell to the arrangement of sunflower seeds and the proportions of the human body—is so pervasive that the ancients called it the Divine Proportion, believing it to be the Creator's building block for the cosmos.

The pentacle drawn on Jacques Saunière's abdomen in his own blood is a direct invocation of PHI. PHI and the Cryptex
The Divine Proportion also underpins the novel's central puzzle. The Fibonacci sequence, from which PHI is derived, appears as the scrambled numbers on the floor of the Grand Gallery: 13-3-2-21-1-1-8-5. Sophie Neveu recognizes these as Fibonacci numbers, and Langdon later realizes that the sequence, when rearranged into its proper order (1-1-2-3-5-8-13-21), forms the ten-digit account number for Saunière's safe-deposit box at the Depository Bank of Zurich. This number, 1123581321, is easy for Saunière to remember yet appears random, a perfect example of the hidden order PHI represents. The cryptex itself, a marble cylinder with lettered dials designed by Leonardo da Vinci, is a mechanical embodiment of this principle: only by aligning the dials to the correct password—itself a word of wisdom, "SOFIA"—can the secret within be accessed.
