The Setup and Sophie's Warning

Inside the men's room at the far end of the Grand Gallery, Sophie Neveu reveals to Langdon that he is under "surveillance cachée"—a guarded observation—and that Fache's primary suspect in Jacques Saunière's murder is Langdon himself. She shows him the GPS tracking dot that a DCPJ agent had slipped into his tweed jacket pocket at the Hotel Ritz Paris, a device that continuously transmits his location to a satellite. Sophie explains that Fache hoped Langdon would run, as it would strengthen the case against him. She insists that Langdon must leave the museum immediately, arguing that if Fache takes him into custody, he will spend weeks in a French jail while the DCPJ and the U.S. Embassy fight over jurisdiction.

The Soap Decoy

Sophie devises an ingenious plan. She takes the GPS tracking dot from Langdon and presses it into a thick bar of soap from the sink, embedding the device deep within the soft surface. Then, retrieving a heavy cylindrical trash can, she runs at the plate-glass window and shatters it with the bottom of the can, triggering a loud alarm. As an enormous twin-bed eighteen-wheeler idles at a traffic light below, Sophie lobs the bar of soap onto the truck's blue vinyl tarp, where it slides into the cargo bay just as the light turns green. The Deception and Aftermath

Fache, hearing the alarm and seeing the GPS dot move outside the building's perimeter, sprints to the men's room and finds the shattered window. The dot's signal shoots across the Seine on Pont du Carrousel, then turns onto Pont des Saints-Peres, leading Fache to believe Langdon has jumped onto the truck and is fleeing. He orders his men to pursue the vehicle, leaving the Grand Gallery deserted. In reality, Langdon and Sophie have hidden themselves behind one of the large partitions that screen the bathrooms from the gallery, pressing their backs against it as Fache rushes past. With the guards now leaving the perimeter, Sophie leads Langdon to an emergency stairwell, and they escape the museum undetected. The chase that follows—a high-speed pursuit through Paris—is set in motion by this single, brilliant act of misdirection.
