If a rising Priory sénéchal can open it, he proves himself worthy of the information it holds." The Grand Master's Role and the Chain of Knowledge

The Grand Master holds a position of unparalleled responsibility within the Priory. Historically, this role has been held by some of the most influential figures in Western culture, including Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Sir Isaac Newton, and Victor Hugo. The Grand Master is the ultimate guardian of the Sangreal documents and the tomb of Mary Magdalene. The brotherhood's threefold charge is to protect these documents, protect the tomb, and nurture the bloodline of Christ. The Grand Master is also responsible for ensuring the continuity of the secret, a duty that becomes critical in times of crisis. When Jacques Saunière, the Grand Master, is murdered, he is forced to break the hierarchy's rules and pass the keystone to his granddaughter, Sophie Neveu, because the three sénéchaux have also been killed. This desperate act underscores the system's vulnerability when its top tier is decapitated.

The Priory's Ultimate Charge and the End of Days

Beyond its day-to-day operations, the Priory of Sion has a long-standing plan to eventually reveal the truth about the Holy Grail to the world. This revelation is tied to the arrival of a specific historical date, often associated with the astrological "End of Days"—the transition from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. The brotherhood's ultimate triumph is to "break the silence and carry out its ultimate triumph by unveiling the Sangreal documents to the world and shouting the true story of Jesus Christ from the mountaintops." This plan, however, is not universally accepted within the Priory. Leigh Teabing, a Grail historian, believes that Jacques Saunière, under pressure from the Church, decided to keep the secret hidden, a betrayal that Teabing uses to justify his murderous quest for the keystone.
