The Assembly

Telemachus Takes a Stand Athena's Encouragement Athena, disguised as Mentes, urges Telemachus to call an assembly and confront the suitors. She also advises him to seek news of his father. The Assembly Telemachus addresses the Ithacan assembly, denouncing the suitors for wasting his property. He asks for a ship to go to Pylos and Sparta. Opposition The suitors mock him, but two eagles appear as an omen. The prophet Halitherses interprets it as a sign of Odysseus's return. The assembly ends inconclusively.

Departure for Pylos

Secret Departure Preparation Telemachus, with Athena's help, secretly prepares a ship and crew. He takes provisions from the store room without telling his mother. Athena as Mentor Athena accompanies him disguised as Mentor. They sail through the night and arrive at Pylos at dawn. The Journey Begins Telemachus leaves behind the suitors, who plot to ambush him on his return.

Visit to Nestor

Telemachus at Pylos Nestor's Hospitality Telemachus and Athena (as Mentor) are welcomed by King Nestor, who is sacrificing to Poseidon. Nestor tells Telemachus about the returns of the Greek heroes, including Agamemnon's murder. News of Odysseus Nestor has no news of Odysseus but suggests Telemachus visit Menelaus in Sparta. He provides a chariot and his son Pisistratus as an escort. Athena's Departure Athena reveals herself as a goddess and departs. Nestor offers a sacrifice to her.

Visit to Menelaus

Telemachus at Sparta Menelaus's Story Menelaus and Helen receive Telemachus. Menelaus recounts his own journey and his encounter with Proteus, who told him that Odysseus is alive on Calypso's island. Helen's Drug Helen adds a drug to the wine that banishes sorrow, and she tells a story of Odysseus's cunning in Troy. Gifts and Departure Menelaus gives Telemachus valuable gifts. Telemachus learns of the suitors' ambush and decides to return home quickly.

Return to Ithaca

The Journey Home Theoclymenus Telemachus meets the prophet Theoclymenus, a fugitive, and takes him aboard. Theoclymenus interprets an omen as a sign of Odysseus's return. Avoiding the Ambush Telemachus avoids the suitors' ambush by landing at a different harbor. He sends the ship to the city and goes to Eumaeus's hut. Reunion with Odysseus At Eumaeus's hut, Telemachus meets his father in disguise. Athena reveals Odysseus, and they plan the revenge.
