Causes and Background

In the wake of Catelyn Stark's abduction of Tyrion Lannister, the west had become a tinderbox. Both Riverrun and Casterly Rock had called their banners, and armies were massing in the pass below the Golden Tooth. It had only been a matter of time until the blood began to flow. The first blood came when a raiding party, which the survivors identified as led by a man of immense size with a voice like stone breaking—unmistakably Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain That Rides—descended on the holdfasts of Sherrer, Wendish Town, and the Mummer's Ford. They burned the fields and houses, butchered livestock, and killed indiscriminately, including women with suckling babes. The survivors, brought before the Iron Throne by Ser Raymun Darry, Ser Karyl Vance, and Ser Marq Piper, testified to the brutality. The brewer Joss described how the raiders drank their fill and then fired his roof; a farmer said they butchered his milk cow and left it for the crows; a smith told how they chased his apprentice boy across the fields with lances for sport before the big one pierced him clean through. At Wendish Town, the people sought shelter in their timbered holdfast, but the raiders piled straw against the wood and burnt them alive, shooting down those who fled the flames.

What Happens

Sitting the Iron Throne in King Robert's absence, Eddard Stark heard the pleas for justice. Despite the protests of Grand Maester Pycelle, who urged that the matter be deferred to the king or referred to Lord Tywin Lannister, Ned resolved to act. He denounced Ser Gregor Clegane, attainted him, stripped him of all rank and titles, and sentenced him to death. To carry out the king's justice, he gave the command to Lord Beric Dondarrion, a young lord with red-gold hair and a black satin cloak dusted with stars. With Beric rode Thoros of Myr, the red priest with a flaming sword; Ser Gladden; Lord Lothar; and twenty of Ned's own household guards. The Knight of Flowers, Ser Loras Tyrell, begged for the honor of acting in Ned's place, but Ned refused him, saying they were about justice, not vengeance. The party rode out at dawn under three banners: the crowned stag of the king, the direwolf of Stark, and Lord Beric's own forked lightning standard. But the mission was a trap. No sooner had Lord Beric's force crossed the Red Fork of the Trident than the Lannisters fell upon them, the king's banner be damned. Ser Raymun Darry was killed, and most of the men from Winterfell were slaughtered. Gregor Clegane took them in the rear as they tried to pull back across the Mummer's Ford. Only a few, including Lord Beric himself, may have escaped.

Consequences and Aftermath

The massacre at the Mummer's Ford had immediate and far-reaching consequences.
