He is first noted during the recruits' sword practice, where his presence is marked by his physical unattractiveness and his habit of making cruel, taunting remarks. Appearance and Personality

Todder is consistently described as ugly, with a shrill, unpleasant voice that sets him apart even among the rough company of the Night's Watch recruits. Pyp, the quick-witted mummer's boy, mocks him by saying, "You're certain to be a ranger, Toad. They'll want you as far from the castle as they can. If Mance Rayder attacks, lift your visor and show your face, and he'll run off screaming." When Jon later intervenes to protect the fat, terrified Samwell Tarly from being beaten by Halder, Todder is among those who laugh and urge the violence on, shouting, "Cut us off a ham!" This incident highlights his cruelty and his willingness to follow the lead of the more aggressive Ser Alliser Thorne. Todder's cowardice is further exposed when he and three other boys corner Jon in the armory. When Jon fights back, Todder is easily knocked over and his head is slammed against the ground, leaving him bloody. This physical defeat underscores his lack of real fighting ability.

Victimization of Samwell Tarly and Jon's Intervention

Todder's most significant role is as a tormentor of Samwell Tarly. After Jon and his friends have protected Sam from the worst of Ser Alliser's abuse, Todder continues to mock him, making oinking noises and calling him "the Lord of Ham." This persistent cruelty forces Jon to take decisive action. Jon gathers the other boys and persuades them to stop bullying Sam, but Todder refuses, declaring, "if Thorne sends me against Lady Piggy, I'm going to slice me off a rasher of bacon." In response, Jon, along with Grenn and Pyp, visits Todder's cell that night. Jon's direwolf, Ghost, pins Todder down and nips at his throat, drawing blood.
