Chett

Chett is a brother of the Night's Watch assigned to the order of stewards, a man whose appearance and temperament mark him as one of the more sullen and hostile figures at Castle Black. He has a wen on his neck the size of a pigeon's egg and a face red with boils and pimples, a disfigurement that perhaps explains his perpetual anger. He serves Maester Aemon alongside Clydas, a short, bald, chinless man with small pink eyes like a mole, and the two of them tend to the aged maester's needs and help him in his duties. Chett's resentment is palpable; when Jon Snow comes to Maester Aemon's apartments late at night to plead for Samwell Tarly, Chett answers the door with open hostility, telling Jon that the maester is abed and to come back on the morrow. Jon forces his way in, and Chett scowls, making a disgusted noise before admitting him. During the conversation, Chett stands by the door, his boils red and angry, and when Jon argues that Sam could be useful as a steward, Chett gives a nasty laugh, saying he has seen what happens to soft lordlings when they are put to work—their hands blister and bleed, or they cut off their own foot with an axe. He insists that the Wall is no place for the weak and that Ser Alliser Thorne should make a man of Sam or kill him, as the gods will. Later, when the rangers return with the bodies of Othor and Jafer Flowers, Chett is with the hounds, which are snarling and whimpering, pulling at their leashes, and he curses them for curs. When Lord Commander Mormont commands him to bring the hounds closer to the corpses, Chett tries, but the dogs resist, and one lunges at him, forcing him to drop the leash and stumble backward. He is present when Samwell Tarly points out the strange lack of decay and blood on the bodies, and when Sam stammers about the blood, Chett shouts out that Sam soils his smallclothes at the sight of it, prompting the rangers to laugh. Chett's role is that of a petty tormentor, a man whose own physical ugliness and low station have curdled into a cruel contempt for anyone he deems weaker or more privileged than himself.
